What Is In A Name?

Freiceadan Storas
My name's origin is kinda complicated. I dreveloped it in the other HP RP I'm a part of, whose main focus is on character bios and development, though I must say mine is definately not up to par in comparison to some.
Short version:
My character is supposedly trying to escape his family's influence, they're sort of like an Irish mafia and very rich. However he still knows they love him, and he in turn loves them, and has respect enough for them to keep the family name (Storas).
He escapes to Hogwarts as a completely different personality and tries not to think back at all upon his family. He has the goal in becoming an auror, in order to protect innocent people from those who would use magic to harm, like his parents. His constant reminder of this goal/vow is his first name of his own creation (Freiceadan), his original first name is known only by those that live near his home, or in it. Because of course to his parent's knowledge he would still use the name they gave him, unless he was up to something.
Now onto how I discovered what to name him:
He's Irish so I wanted a Gaelic name, so I looked up an English-->Gaelic translation tool, not easy to find, free at least.
The first name, Freiceadan (pronounced Frith-coimhead-an), roughly translated means "guardian of life", fitting with his vow to protect others from evil uses of magic.
The last name/family name, Storas, when translated means money or wealth, fitting to his ridiculously wealthy family.

My friends at school call me Barney because they say I look like the purple dinosaur himself! (And I'm a girl...friends can be weird at times;))
Anyway, I love Sirius Black, too!
So Barney + Black = Barney Black!
Hope that made sense! My name is very boring, though, unlike all the other unique names you all have!
Cheers!

Well, my name is Marinna Danea. My real name looks nothing like this at all /happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />. One night I was looking through my babyname book, just in case I ever need an exoctic name /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />. And, I came across Marinna! I have loved this name forever. So the night I want to sign up for HOL I relize that I need two names. So what do I do? I whip out my name book, read it (for a loooooong time) and came across Danea!
I also made a few other exotic names so if anyone wants a new name, PM me and I'll send you a few to choose from /happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />!

All of you guys have pretty cool names! My first name ((Charisse)) isn't my REAL name, i chose it because my foreign name means grace and kindness, so i found a name of French origin ((my favorite country)) that meant the same thing. As for my last name, Fairchilde, it doesn't really have a big story behind it unlike some of your names! but i love fairies and my friends always call me a mischievious teenager, so i just added fairy and child together. lol.

My first name is a derivation of my real name *blush*
And my surname is a derivation of the latin name of the mandrake (mandragora (officiniaris?))
And mandrakes are common things in the world of HP.
there, I said it! /cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="B)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

I remember exactly how i got my name! It was a lovely story...really...very inspiring...okay now im just being goofy.
Well i dunno how many of you watch survivor (i do and i know im a loser...but it's addictive...like Harry potter!) and there was this guy in one season named Lex and I loved that name...so i came up with a girl version that was slightly longer...Alexia.
I wrote a story about Alexia but it was really crappy but it was about their 5th year and Alexia was a student from America and Draco's cousin. Hence the last name Malfoy...but i decided to drop that here...i don't wanna be related Draco...cuz then it'd be wrong to like him /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Relaynie Darcy
Yay! Lovely topic, Sherry. Glad to see I'm not the only person who reads baby books for names.
Why am I Relaynie Darcy? So glad you asked...I love this name, especially the Relaynie. It's an amalgamation of my RL first and middle names, Alana and Renee. People call me Lanie a lot, so I just took the Re- from Renee and added a y so pronunciation wasn't ambiguous.
Darcy I stole from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, since I love her books. I was very nearly Relaynie Owlish. Actually, I still kind of like that name, but there it is.
I do have middle names as well, but I didn't want to overdo it when I was signing up. My full HOL name, then, is Relaynie Galadriel Blackbird Darcy. I like Galadriel in LOTR because she's beautiful but just a bit dangerous. And Blackbird is from the Beatles song, since I love it.
So there you are, the three-knut version of the history of my name. I've enjoyed reading everyone else's posts. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

o0o.. ::pokes thread:: Informative little thing isn't it?
My name? JoAnna Drakon. Well, let's see.
JoAnna is my name. Nicknames, Jo or Joey. Just so there's no surprises when I sign a post like that.
Drakon? I'm really not sure where I came up with that. I like dragons and wanted something fairly original as well. Not to mention I wanted something that would sound half-way decent with my first name. ::snort:: Not that it does. /happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" /> And that's basically my fascinating story.

Well, I obviously stole my name from JK's imagination, but here goes...
I got this analysis from www.kabalarians.com...
Your name of Cho gives you a strong sense of responsibility in business and material affairs, and the practicality and determination to make a success of anything you undertake. You are self-sufficient and capable, and have an interest in positions of leadership and responsibility. You are competent in directing the efforts of others, as you have good business judgment and the natural understanding of people. Very likely you have assumed much responsibility early in life and are often required to make major decisions. You appreciate settled, accumulative conditions, and a high standard of living. You have a strong, determined nature and tend to dominate others, and to interfere, at times, in your desire to be helpful. This name gives you many good characteristics, but it is too strong, creating a materialistic nature and bringing out a forceful, demanding quality. The heavy responsibility your name creates can result in a worrying, intense nature. It spoils the development and expression of your warmer, more feminine attributes.
Other reasons:
Cho- also means intelligent, beautiful, and butterfly (depending on the
language), and she's my second-fave female HP character, after Hermione<--- Hermione might as well be written about me! I adore Cho because she's the type of girl I want to be.
Wood- it's German or something for crazy, which I admit to being the majority of the time. And I'm crazy for Oliver!
I even have two middle names that I don't use at all, Ellacius Aphrodeicia.
Ellacius is derived from the name Ella, because of what the name means and because it sounds so feminine. Aphrodeicia is a twist on Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, and I believe she is Phoebus Apollo's mother (I'm in the middle of reading a mythology book, so I'll check that out).
So, in the end, I am a . Not bad, considering I thought of the first name to come to my head...
Cheers!

Well, my HOL name was given to me in part by my mom... when I was in my early teens for some strange reason she started calling me ZELDA! And even after A LOT of years at times she still will refer to me as that. When I found HOL and was asked for my student name and saw some of the WONDERFUL names that people had come up with, the first thing I thought of was that Zelda would be a great name for a magical person... and Adlez is Zelda spelled backwards! So that's how I came with my HOL student name.

mine's boring but i figured i'd add it anyways....
veronica is my real name. i love it, cos it sounds pretty in tons of languages- especially both english and spanish. i'm mexican american so that was an important consideration for my parents
aragon....well i wanted to have a spanish name, but not my RL last name. so i looked through some spanish geneaology sites...i like aragon because its not as common as garcia or martinez, it sounds regal (the old kingdom of aragon) and its really fun to say in spanish. like my RL name, the -a of veronica and the a- of aragon blend together so when you say it really fast it sounds like one word /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
