This American author is one of my favorite, while her main focus is the harsh youth environment mainly in large American cities and not so much the science fictions or fantasy genre I mostly like, she has had a huge impact om my view on literature in general as her book the Outsiders was the book that got me into reading.
I can highly recommend reading her books, while they do picture more realistic environments. She is good at creating interesting stories, I have read more of her books and they carry a similar structure to the outsiders.

Some of her most famous books are The Outsiders (1967), That Was Then, This Is Now (1971), Rumble Fish (1975), Tex (1979) and Taming the Star Runner (1988)
