Remember we're meeting in #gamesroom tomorrow at 5 PM HOL-time! But more importantly, remember that the clocks go back in the UK tonight so HOL time will be changing back to UTC: this means the games might not necessarily be at the time you expect so double check HOL-time on the Calendar Page.

We’re pleased to announce we’ll be meeting in #gamesroom on Sunday 25th November, 5 till 8 PM HOL-time. Come join us!

In October, We had an exciting first session of the school year with a fabulous turnout. We started off with a warm up game of ‘Where Am I’ (essentially a hybrid between hide and seek and 20 questions): Prof. Tarma Black was in the Hogwarts kitchens, a hiding place that lead our guessers to wish they had a blueprint of the castle in front of them. As if that wasn’t disorientating enough, our next hider was even more difficult to pin down but after running through just about every business we’d ever walked by on Diagon Alley, we eventually discovered Prof. Zenix James in the Visitor’s Tearoom and Hospital Shop at St Mungos.

After that, we had a game of ‘Spell it Out’ where our players must decide how to respond to a given situation using one of the spells dealt out to them. Zenix was a victor yet again for a well-deserved silencing charm on a very destructive kitty and Iverian Gnash won simply for styling out a terrible ostrich incident with such panache that I forgot to make a note of which spell she actually used. The champion of our next scenario was Katelin Ross who simply decided to make a situation all better by providing everyone with slides. Tarma emerged victorious in the next round for an incredibly well timed cheering charm and Katelin rounded off the game with another win, this time for breaking up a brawl with disillusionment charms.

To complete the evening we entered the dicey land of Work Experience with The Hogwarts Internship Program. In my new role as recruiter for The Quibbler, Gringotts Bank and The Department for Magical Transportation (why do you think this recap is so late, I’ve not had time to blink!), it was up to me to decide who was worthy of each internship based on the application they submitted and how well they used the 5 random qualities/items dealt out to them. Will Lestrange swiped the position at The Quibbler for his total lack of discipline teamed with an advanced ability to deal with Snorkack bites. Vanessa Tilley will be heading to Gringotts on the strength of her innovative use of Gillyweed to perform maintenance on ‘The Thief’s Downfall’. Iverian will be bringing chaos to the ministry with her plan for edible portkeys. It’s just as well I picked up some valuable tips on how to write an application: my career as recruiter may be, I’m sad to say, short lived.

Looking forward to more fun on the 25th!

You’re all cordially invited to join us for more fun in #gamesroom on Sunday December 16th, 5-8 PM HOL-time

November’s was a very relaxed affair. We started off with a case of an old favourite: 20 Questions in Reverse. The thing to guess was particularly devious this time meaning it took Will Lestrange a while (and a couple of hints) to work out that he was actually the charm ‘reparo’. Fun fact: the spell isn’t named until book 4 which astounded me. It’s so useful!

Next we played Articulate with Amy and myself joining in to spice things up. My dodgy spelling certainly managed that, though Prof. Tarma Black’s Monty Python references were equally as hilariously baffling. We began an informal contest to see who could come up with the most obscure clues and with answers spanning non-tradable items, confectionary, languages and Quidditch moves (and players), things got quite obscure indeed. The final score was Will on 12, myself on 5 and Tarma on 3.

Next we revived Apples to Apples (affectionately known as Gurdyroots to Gurdyroots), with Professor Flitwick’s sassiness and a terrible case of pixies being some of the highlights. Amy and Tarma both secured two victories with Will and I both getting 1. There was time for one round of traditional 20 Questions after that which left us all stumped until Tarma gave us the most generous hint ever and Will finally pinned it down as ‘niffler’ (we’d all been thinking centaur, acromantula or unicorn, so not even in the right MoM classification ballpark).

Hope you can drag yourself away from the other excitements occurring round the castle this month and join us on the 16th!

We're hoping to launch a new game at our next Gathering and Games event, but we need your help to make it happen.

We've composed a list of categories needing suggestions using the following form. For example, if the category were "wizarding sweet", you might suggest "chocolate frog".

While we do ask that you keep all your suggestions HOL-appropriate, feel free to make your suggestions random, funny and/or creative. We won't necessarily be going with the most common suggestion, but rather ones that we feel might make the game more interesting.

Thanks in advance!

January’s gathering will be in #gamesroom on Sunday the 27th, 5 until 8 PM HOL! Join us to celebrate the end of the autumn term.

December’s session was hectic to say the least. We kicked things off with a good old fashioned snowball fight, a game I’d only dreamed up a few hours previously which turned out to be the perfect demonstration of why Amy starts researching vacations on remote and peaceful islands whenever I say ‘I’ve had an idea!’. Everyone was provided with 5 snowballs and had 5 lives. The aim was to get rid of all your snowballs (by flinging them at everyone else) while retaining as many of your lives as possible. Cody Lewis was first up to the plate but he took some convincing to actually throw one at anyone: his nobility of heart obviously saw him through as he survived for several rounds without any of the snowballs chucked his way actually hitting their target. He was our winner with 4 lives remaining, with Vanessa Tilley and Shadow Gaunt tying on 3, Will Lestrange on 2 and Amy trailing with 1.

It was time for something a bit more cooperative and we divided up into the Purple (Cody and Vanessa) and Orange (Shadow and Will) teams for ‘Word on Diagon Alley’ (Letter Tug-o-War). This is a game of linguistic agility where your ability to think of words with a lot of different letters is paramount. We saw such wonderful words as 'whipper-snipper' (securing Orange their first letter), 'aranygaluska' (courtesy of Purple), mangshanyegan (a citrus fruit appropriately submitted by Orange) and perhaps most impressively of all, Vanessa’s 'Micropachycephalosaurus'. This latter lead to the best question I think we’ve ever heard at G and G: Cody ‘What’s the scientific name for a whipper-snipper?’. The final score was 6 for Orange, 4 for Purple.

There was time for a quick blitz of fan favourite, 'Who Am I'. Temporality tripped up Shadow into revealing herself as Neville, allowing Cody to take over. He kept us guessing for a while until Nessa thought to ask whether he helped out at Quidditch matches and the spotlight fell on Madame Hooch.

Phew, I’m out of breath just recapping all that. We hope to see you back in #gamesroom for more fun on the 27th!

This month’s gathering will be in #gamesroom on Sunday 24th February, 5 PM until 8 PM HOL-Time

January’s session was a Social Deduction Special, starting with an old friend: Spyfall. First we were in a school. Questions about the number of rooms, books, cameras and people abounded. Unfortunately for our spy, Iverian Gnash, she was unmasked fairly swiftly due to her ambiguous response regarding the number of windows. Location 2 was a submarine. Prof. Tarma Black and Vanessa Tilley were masterfully vague about the presence of food and water but the eagle eyed spy, Shadow Gaunt, swooped in and uncovered the location in record time.

Next we tried a brand new game, the wonderfully and weirdly named ‘Werewords’. Here, the village was tasked with working out what person or thing their mayor was thinking of while the seer tried to subtly help and the werewolf tried to subtly hinder. Questions ranged all over the place as we tried to work out what living thing Mayor Adaleine Shuster was thinking of. Tarma managed to guess house elf but the game wasn’t won yet. Nessa the werewolf revealed herself and was able to identify Iverian as the seer, securing victory for lupine kind. Nessa reformed to become the town’s mayor for the second round and came up with a word so devious that the village was stumped. After nobody got it on the final question, we held a vote to discover the werewolf. Suspicions were evenly split between Tarma, Iverian and Cody Lewis, meaning that Cody managed to escape detection.

To finish off the evening, I offered people the chance to pick our game and they all plumped for the Hogwarts Internship Program. What I didn’t let on at the time was that I didn’t actually have the cards for that one: cue a frantic 5 minutes while I did my best to remember items and traits from past iterations of the game (and did some shameless inventing). Cody was our first employer and he was after a new Dragon Trainer. Tarma cited her ‘sparkling’ love for dragons and useful gigantic ‘toadstool’ (for springing onto their backs, something Cody told us you must never do); Adaleine put forward a case involving her ‘enthusiasm and ‘invisibility cloak’, a combination she regarded as so successful she foresaw just being able to sit back and eat ‘chocolate frogs’. However, it was Iverian’s promise to make the dragons very ‘fluffy’ beds and keep mischief makers away with her ‘sneakoscope’ that won her the contract.

This meant she was able to take up the mantel of employer for the next round and after I’d run around with some more totally not improvised cards, she announced the vacant post: Librarian. Tarma made a strong, ‘cape’ swirling start, vowing to go after book offenders with her ‘ever-bashing boomerang’. Shadow focused on her responsible streak, vowing to go after ‘hairy’ spiders who would menace her books and challenge any suspicious characters seeking to gain access to the Restricted Section with a going over with her ‘probity probe’. Adaleine was another formidable (if ‘flamboyant’) Librarian but admitted that she didn’t permit ‘The Monster Book of Monsters’ in her library as it was a safety hazard (to the other books, you understand). However, it was Cody who swiped the position with a fine demonstration of his ‘discipline’, though really it was because of his very ‘fancy hat’ (a card which has secured several other victories over the time we’ve been playing the game).

We look forward to seeing you in #gamesroom on the 24th!

We’re delighted to invite you back to the #gamesroom for more fun on Sunday 31st March, 5-8 PM Hol-time!

February was an exciting session with a great attendance from all houses and major kudos goes to Amy who managed to run it pretty much single-handed while I languished with flu and tried to be encouraging (and not too incoherent) from the side-lines. We kicked things off with Spell it Out. The first scenario asked our players what spell they’d cast to prevent themselves getting soaked on the way to Herbology in a downpour: Prof. Tarma Black waltzed away with the victory with her use of a vanishing charm (and even managed not to vanish the greenhouses). Cody Lewis won the next round for his gratuitous use of green sparks in a potions mishap, Shadow Gaunt came next for her rather counterintuitive idea to solve a sneezing situation with flowers, Cody won yet again for his promotion of recycling and Vanessa Tilley rounded things off by demonstrating the value of patience as she had the perfect spell left over (reparo) to get her out of a sticky situation with a shattered vase.

Next we switched to Social Deduction and welcomed back our newest game, Werewords. Adaleine Shuster was elected for another term as mayor: the villagers correctly guessed the thing she was thinking of (Basilisk) but Werewolf Shadow unmasked seer Vanessa to steal the victory from under their noses. The villagers couldn’t keep up the streak though and failed to guess the thing newly elected Mayor Cody was thinking of (Wronski Feint), though they did manage to defeat Prof. Zenix James the werewolf by correctly identifying her.

We rounded off with an old favourite, Articulate. It was a fun and fast game with the final score ending at Cody on 13, Tarma on 6, Will Lestrange on 7 and Iverian Gnash on 4.

We look forward to seeing you on the 31st! Remember that Daylight Savings Time will be coming into effect in the early hours of that day in Europe (the clocks go forward an hour) so double check the HOL Calendar page on the day for the new HOL time.

A bit on the late side but April’s gathering will be on Sunday the 28th, 5 PM until 8 PM HOL-time. We look forward to seeing you then in #gamesroom!

March’s gathering was very well attended and we played quite a few short games. This began with a new (and very devious) game called ‘Just One’. Here, someone volunteers to be ‘it’; the host then privately tells everyone else the word ‘it’ must try to guess. They have to provide the host with a single word clue that will point the guesser in the right direction. The devious part is that if multiple people suggest the same clue, it gets cancelled out and can’t be used. First up, Shadow Gaunt was it; the word was 'brush' and many people said hair, meaning that Shadow was left to guess from painting and bristle (which she did). The second round was by far the most creative and saw Iverian Gnash correctly light on 'diamond' from Forever, ring, gem, Rihanna and rough. Cody Lewis wasn’t nearly so lucky (as there was a lot of cancelling out in round 3) and couldn’t guess 'rose' from companion and valentine. Prof. Tarma Black was equally as unfortunate and couldn’t guess 'myth' from Demigods and legend (Greek and ancient having been resoundingly cancelled out). The aim is for the entire room to get as many points as possible so I’d say a draw was very respectable for our first attempt.

We had a quick round of ‘Once Upon a Time’ after this where Tarma told us about some devious goings on on the part of some fae folk in a magical bookstore. We weren’t really feeling that game though and moved on to the fan favourite of Twenty Questions Through the Looking Glass. Anna Snape was victorious, guessing puffskein in 12 questions (well, less. She just wanted to make doubly sure). We decided to mix it up even further by rounding things off with ‘Who Am I’. Shadow kept everyone guessing for quite a while with her incredibly convincing Dean Thomas impression before being unmasked by Will Lestrange.

See you on the 28th!

May’s #gamesroom gathering will be in around 2 weeks on May 19th, 5 until 8 PM HOL-time! It’ll be a fun packed day on IRC - make sure you stick around for a couple of hours after we’re done to catch Quidditch Pick-ups as well.

In April, we were on the hunt for spies, treasure and elusive words. In our first round of Spyfall, Kendra Givens was our spy on a cruise ship; however, Iverian Gnash was accused by the group, allowing Kendra to slip away undetected in a lifeboat. Will Lestrange was undercover at the circus but it was Amy who was wrongfully convicted and he went free. History repeated itself one last time at the movie studio as Iverian escaped detection, with Will accused this time. It was a great day to be a spy, that’s for sure!

Next up, we decided that we hadn’t had quite enough excitement with our attempts at counterespionage and delved into some dangerous ruins instead with Cursebreakers. In round 1 of 3, Iverian, Prof. Tarma Black and Anna Snape ventured into the ruins and encountered a wealth of treasure very early on. Tarma and Iverian decided that caution was the better part of valour and ducked out with their share of the spoils. Anna went on alone for a great distance, surviving just about every hazard the game has to offer before she decided not to push her luck any further: she left with 26 treasure, having snagged an artefact. Will joined them for their second quest into the ruins which was again very profitable early on, with everyone slinking by a sphynx. Tarma tactically retreated first, with the others battling on through purple mist. Iverian was next to head home, leaving the two Slytherins to venture further in. Will finally decided to exit, leaving Anna once again the sole adventurer. She went on to collect a handful more treasures before following them all out. The 4 decided to try their luck one more time. Dodging fwoopers and inobservant bandits, they gathered lots more gold before Iverian and Will headed back to base camp. Tarma and Anna ventured on through purple mist and even got around another sphinx but they couldn’t overcome a second encounter with those pesky fwoopers and had to run out without their gold. We finished the endeavour with Anna on 45, Iverian on 30, Will on 24 and Tarma on 18.

Next up, we welcomed our new game ‘Just One’ back to the floor. Everyone really seemed to find their rhythm as after a few warm up rounds, we had very little trouble with clues cancelling themselves out. Adaleine Shuster correctly guessed zoo from zebras and exhibits. Will correctly guessed book from paper and read. Unfortunately, Iverian couldn’t guess coffee from plantation, ambrosia, awake or Tarma. It was obviously contagious as Adaleine failed to get knight from king, squire, chess, chivalry and ni. Amy broke our losing streak by guessing peace from harmony, UN, dove, rose and quiet. Anna got flower from rose, bloom, sneeze, spring and May. Year, months, reminder and almanac spelled victory for us one last time as Iverian correctly guessed calendar.

See you for more hijinks on the 19th!

We’ll be meeting in #gamesroom for the last gathering of the school year on Sunday, June 23rd between 5 and 8 PM HOL-Time!

May’s games were quite quiet but we still had a blast. To kick things off, we did a quick fire round of The Hogwarts Internship Program. Will Lestrange and Prof. Tarma Black were competing for a very desirable job as an obliviator for the Ministry of Magic. Tarma was excited and curious but it was Will’s casual disregard for the sanctity of time that landed him the job (come to think of it, maybe that’s why Slytherin’s Emerald Cup celebrations are experiencing such trouble with temporality).

New favourite ‘Just One’ has been a feature of a lot of our events recently and this was no exception. We started off strong as hoist, mast and wind gave Amy sail, which Tarma followed up by guessing cookie from oatmeal, baked and monster. Not unsurprisingly, Kendra Givens couldn’t get straw from final (camel having been cancelled out). I followed suit as, while I was on the right track, I didn’t quite get cinema from popcorn, theatre and Hollywood. Kendra struck unlucky again and didn’t manage to pull off the highly improbable and guess map from ink (the force was not with her this game). At last we hit on a winning streak again as I got forest from tree, Gump and timber. Amy got butterfly from symmetry, monarch and Cassie. We finished off with a final victory as goods, stall and super meant Tarma correctly guessed Market.

We decided to round things off with a good old fashioned game of Articulate. Imposing a guess limit meant people got very inventive with their clues, with work for the Hogwarts laundry and the only professor to have been seen teaching at the age of 31 proving particularly tricky. It did, however, lead to a wonderful exchange between Will and Tarma: ‘no one is guessing?’ ‘That’s not an accurate statement. Guessing and not writing’. It was a good game as everyone managed to score, though we finished with Will and Tarma tying for first place.

Please do come and celebrate the end of classes and the start of the summer holidays with us on the 23rd!

June’s session was a ton of fun!

We started off with a game of Where Am I (20 Questions crossed with Hide and Seek). Prof. Tarma Black was our willing hider and while we quickly established she was within the Hogwarts Castle, after that things became far more baffling. She wasn’t in a wing, she wasn’t in a hall, she wasn’t in a corridor, we checked the classrooms but couldn’t find her at all. Adaleine Shuster pursued portraits and Amy found her feet taken from under her by the absence of moving stairs. Eventually Will Lestrange discovered Tarma in the little room (or antechamber) off the Entrance Hall where Harry and co waited to be sorted and Iverian Gnash declared her far too devious to be allowed.

Next we played Spell it Out where our players must solve the scenario in front of them with one of the random spells on their card. First we had to find a way to distract Peeves so we could sneak in to replace a missing library book, rather than face the wrath of Madam Pince; Tarma chose a rather drastic (read: illegal) way past, while Will relied on definitions. However, it was Iverian’s use of a spell that caused the tricky poltergeist to burst into song that won the day. Next we had to decide what to do after a fall from a broomstick on a cold and rainy night: Tarma tried to attract attention with red sparks but Will’s first thought was for his broomstick and using Finite Encantatem to put right the hostile spell that had obviously been cast on it. Next we had to decide what to do with a pushy second year intent on challenging us to a duel: Will thought to scare him off with bombada and a bit of innocent property damage while Ivey just skipped straight to locking him in a room. Next we had to cheer up a portrait after a rogue bombada spell had destroyed part of her canvas: Tarma put leeks in her own ears while Ivey humiliated a group of innocent boggarts to raise a smile. Lastly, we had to solve a packing crisis before our HoH arrived to find our possessions were still strewn all over the dormitory: Tarma accused her possessions of cheating by hiding from her (and used an anti-cheating spell to force them out into the open) whereas Ivey just tried to distract her HoH with green sparks.

We rounded things off with perennial favourite Who Am I. Will put in a very good performance, foxing us with a Hogwarts Staff Member whose father was a muggle but who was not our immediate guess of Severus Snape. They went on to say that teaching had been one of their greatest pleasures and that they had once been Head of House (but weren’t anymore), which allowed me to guess at the correct answer of Minerva McGonagall. My answer of ‘well, I certainly wasn’t in very good shape’ to the question of whether I made it through the Battle of Hogwarts eventually unmasked me as Lavender Brown. Will put in a very dramatic turn as Gregory Goyle. Finally, Tarma stumped us for ages with her turn as Tenebrus the thestral, eventually being uncovered by Will.

There won’t be any sessions for the next couple of months as Amy and I need to catch up on sleep *clears throat* work, we need to catch up on work. We’ll return with fresh new ideas and plans after a peaceful summer break.
