In the class forum on the HOL forum, tell us - what made you interested in taking this class? What prior knowledge about gemstones do you bring to this class, if any? Do you have a favorite stone? What are you hoping to learn from this class? Tell us anything you'd like to, as long as you write at least 150 words! (15 points)

I write an article for The HOwLer that's about gemstones (that did just start off with me doing the birthstone idea from the Idea Bank lol) and they're some of my favorite things to read about so I have a fair amount of knowledge prior to this class. I've always loved learning about them and when you brought up that you had a class in the works for this in the IRC chat, I was automatically hooked in and waiting (mostly) patiently for it to be available to take.

My favorite gemstone is amethyst! It's so pretty and also why my favorite color is purple. I also do really like my own birthstones moonstone, alexandrite, and pearl but especially moonstones. Those gemstones always look really neat to me.

I'm hoping to learn things about the stones that I haven't found in my own research of them for my article! And anything I do learn I'll keep out of my article so that people who read it will be able to learn something new as well!

I have heard Prof. Kendra Givens (possibly before she was even a professor) talk about wanting to teach this class for quite some time, and remembered her talking about her ideas for the class with much interest. This made me want to learn a bit about the course to see the topic through her eyes!

My most recent experience with gemstones was through a game known as "Quixort" where you need to work together as a team to sort nine falling blocks (plus maybe some junk blocks to throw away) in order from left to right. Our topic one round was "birthstones" with January on the left and December on the right, but I only knew five of the birthstones at the time: aquamarine (March), diamond (April), emerald (May), sapphire (September), and opal (October) - only knowing the last two because of the trick 'sapphire and September begin with S; opal and October begin with O'. We gave a valiant effort - with someone even supplying my in-character birthstone (topaz/November) which I didn't know offhand... except it was all for naught when we placed turquoise at the wrong end of the scale; we had it at January instead of December.

As we moved onto other games, I made sure to memorize a list of birthstones in real time, using memory tricks, one for each month: garnet, amethyst, aquamarine, diamond, emerald, pearl, ruby, peridot, sapphire, opal, topaz, turquoise (though this course gives a different gemstone as the 'main' one for December). This gave me a sense of what I was missing!

My 'favorite' would be my out-of-character birthstone, emerald (for May)... and I'll also add that sometimes birthstones are associated with zodiac sun signs rather than months; e.g. aquamarine is for Pisces instead of March (and therefore gains the end of February but loses the end of March) - but I look forward to seeing what I can learn from this course!

I chose to that this class because one of my friends is very interested in gemstones and would tell me about them. Once I saw this course on the website, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to expand my knowledge a little bit more and understand more about gemstones. I have very basic knowledge about gemstones, mostly coming from my friend who told me a bit the properties of different gemstones. I also own a pink quartz that I bought with my friend a few months ago. This is the stone I know the most about. I also know some technical terms, such as the one learnt today (how they are forms, how to qualify their purity and worth, and different cuts) as I study them during university. I don’t have a favourite stone, as I found them all fascinating. During this class, I’m the most excited to learn more about the birth stones, especially their properties and how they were used by different civilisations.

I chose to take this class because gemstones have fascinated me for as long as I can remember. Plus, at the sake of sounding vain, I am a jewelry hound! I cannot even begin to tell you how many hours I have logged watching JTV (jewelry television) or Shop LC (another jewelry channel). I am a regular magpie in that aspect; if it sparkles, I want it!
Well, that's not exactly true. Even if it doesn't sparkle, I want it (pearls and turquoise, anyone?). Since we were children, my sister and I have accumulated a rather impressive rock collection of which we are most proud!

While I cannot claim to have a gemologist for a mum (how cool!), nor am I an expert on the subject, I have accumulated some knowledge along the way. I love to read about gemstones and rocks and in fact, just acquired recently a book on the subject written by gemologist Daniel Dennis. Stop laughing; watching jewelry on television can be pretty educational! Both channels have expert gemologists on staff who give mini-lectures and offer information on the stones they are selling. I may not be able to afford any gemstone offered by Tony Diniz (a gemologist with 20+ years of experience), but I have learned quite a bit from him.

My favorite stone? Can I just say all of them?! Seriously, that's a hard call, Professor. If I had to make a pick, I suppose it would be pearls. Not only do I find them beautiful, but I have a personal collection with them. My 'real name' is based (in part) on a legendary mermaid's name, so..mermaids, sea, pearls...you get the point.

I am hoping to learn more about gemstones, which will make me a more savvy collector and purchaser. Besides, I love learning new things; yes, my Ravenclaw is showing!

Hi. My name is Skylar Peyton. I am a fourth year, Hufflepuff student. I was interested in taking this class because I like gemstones, they are so pretty and cool to look at and hold. I like how smooth they are and how they sparkle. I once held a blue Sapphire and was amazed by it. I think that's what got me interested in learning more about all gemstones. They are much more interesting than regular rocks!!! I am sorry to say that other than holding that Sapphire, I have very little to no prior knowledge of gemstones. I guess that's another reason why i'm here, to learn more about them. Blue Sapphires are definitely my favorite gemstone by far. The way it glows and it almost look mysterious. Through taking this class, I am hoping to learn more about Sapphires as well as other gemstones. I am hoping to increase my knowledge of gemstones.

Ever since I was a child, I had a fascination in colors. Every color had a different vibe within me, and I enjoyed exploring this interest in every way I can. So learning about the existence of gemstones was an eye-opening experience, as they were, to me, the physical embodiment of color: color in a real, physical, tangible form. As I learned about the concept of money and value, my appreciation for such beautiful, rare stones grew. Now, even though many years have passed, learning about gemstones still trigger an excited child within me.

It is difficult to pick a single favorite gemstone, as it may differ from time to time, but at the moment, amethyst is a strong contender. Other than the fact that it happens to be my birthstone, its striking purple color especially resonates within me as a very ‘epic’ color. Emeralds are also somewhere up there, as green is also one of my favorite colors.

Seeing this class in the class list sort of woke up the little child within me, as I hope to further expand my knowledge on an enchanting subject.

Why am I interested in taking this class? Well, I am always interested in learning something new about many different subjects. Since we are exposed to jewelry all the time and in many ways, why not gain more knowledge about the jewels mounted within them. The placement of the stone in the setting of any piece is what makes the statement. This is regardless of whether it is a simple or intricate design.

Probably like everyone else I have a basic understanding of the month assigned gemstones along with some of the more popular ones. You know like the diamond for example. Beyond that, I can’t imagine how numerous that number might be. I would like to discover more information so I can become more familiar with as many of them as possible.
My favorite gemstone is Amethyst in the rich purple color. Why this hue? Because it is my birthstone and then I have always been particularly drawn to it. It however does not keep me from purchasing and admiring other gemstones.

I became interested in this class the minute I discovered Prof. Kendra Givens was writing it! She writes great classes. I'm also a fan of actress Elizabeth Taylor, who was well known for her gorgeous and extensive gem collection, and I've seen photos and read descriptions of them in books about her, and it's hard for the fascination not to rub off on me. I'm also into Astrology and birth months, and each month has its own gemstone. I'm also fascinated by color, and gems come in so many gorgeous colors!

I wanted to know a bit more about them - how they're formed, which country they're mined from, and how hardy they are. It amazes me that Rubies and Sapphires are the same stone - just a different color!

My favorite stone is the Amethyst. I was born in February and it is February's birthstone. Deep purple is one of my favorite colors, and this gemstone is so beautiful!

I have always had a fascination with gemstones. I think it may be because of their shiny nature. They are pleasing to look at, especially when they have been cut to sparkle just right. I have two favorite gemstones. One is opal. I think opals are beautiful. They look sort of like a kaleidoscope and change colors as the light hits them so they never really look the same. Opals are also a very soft gemstone and can be easily damaged so you have to be very careful with them. My other favorite gemstone is my birthstone, topaz. Topaz can vary in color, but is usually more yellow or orange. It can also be blue Topaz is often associated with magical purposes. It is also known for its healing purposes. It can also be used for calm in moments of stress or chaos. While I know a little about these two gemstones, I am looking forward to learning about others while taking this class.

I am interested in taking Gemstones 101 since I already have a large interest in gemstones. I have some prior knowledge of gemstones due to a hyper-fixation when I was around 14-15 years old. I curated a large collection of gemstones from a local spiritual shop in my hometown, and would visit regularly (maybe a few times a week) to increase this collection and discuss gemstones with the volunteers who worked there.

My favourite stone is actually my birth stone, the Amethyst. I think this is largely because my favourite colour is purple, so whenever I would collect amethysts on my trips to the spiritual shop and other places, e.g. holidays with little gem giftshops, I’d love to compare the different shades and shapes with one another.

I am hoping to learn a lot more about gemstones to add to the knowledge that I already have, and maybe rekindle my love for collecting and researching gemstones in my free time!

I am interested in taking gemstones 101 since I find them very interesting. How they have been formed and how long it took. I have a small collection of stones from over the years, although I don't know much about them. My birth month is April which makes my birthstone a diamond. I am hoping to learn a lot more about the different types of gemstones an show they were formed.

There are many reasons why I chose to take this class, but the main reasons why are because I love gemstones, and I have taken several of Kendra's other classes and enjoyed them all! I have always been interested in gemstones, specifically when it comes to birthstones. My birthstone is a sapphire, and I especially love it when I find it in the purple color. I find it interesting how a birthstone can have a more dominant color (or a color you see more frequently) while also finding so many different color variations of it in different shops and in museums. I would definitely say my favorite stone is a sapphire, but I also love all kinds of gemstones. I also chose this class, because it is taught by a professor that I have taken other classes of hers, and thoroughly enjoyed her topics and her lesson/homework layout. For me, the shinier the gemstone and more colorful, the better!

I have always had a passion for gemstones and have been interested in them for a very long time. So when I saw this course I immediately knew I was going to take it. Unfortunately I do not have any prior knowledge due to not knowing how to start on learning about it, so I am extremely excited for this course. Besides that my favourite all time gemstone is the Lapis Lazuli, I find it so beautiful. Though in all honesty I do love my birthstone a lot too, which is the aquamarine birthstone. I find that it has a pretty light blue color and it gives me a calm vibe. For what I want to learn in the class, is vary various, I want to know more about the history of the stones, about what they mean, how I know what they look like, what is real, what is fake. Honestly, I am willing to learn about anything about them. And from the little sneak peak I took, I think I will learn quite a bit about them!
