Wicked the Movie

Post by Maeve Madden »

Starting this thread because I'm surprised it hasn't been made already! What did everyone think of the new Wicked movie?

I wouldn't say I'm a die-hard Wicked fan (although I have seen the musical a few times, including the original with Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth), but wow, did I ever like the movie! I thought they did a great job at transferring the stage version to the screen. Also, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande did so well! I was a bit hesitant when Ariana Grande was first cast as Glinda, but I was gladly proven wrong by her performance.

If you haven't seen the movie, I would 100% recommend it. It's great for both people who love the musical and people who know nothing about it - either way, you'll have fun and enjoy yourselves.

I was enthralled the entire time. I’m similarly not a die hard fan (though did catch it once on broadway, and am sooo happy/envious you got the Idina/Kristin experience!) but with all of its history and how much it’s meant to so many people for so long, I was incredibly proud of what they put out for this first movie. Knowing its background—and the full content of the story—I was emotional a lot more of the movie than I was expecting. Like basically throughout, lol.

SO impressed by the production, and absolutely love the casting choices. I used to think Ariana was a good singer but didn’t quite get the hype, then she really started growing on me, and I’m quite taken with her now. I was still a bit hesitant about how she’d do when I first heard she was set for the role, but wow. Wow! Did she and everyone else just nail it. I cannot wait for part two!

I'm a huge theatre kid so was buzzing for the movie! I was also a bit hesitant when Ariana Grande was cast but she has got previous Broadway experience & I adored her performance in the film (although, I still do think I wish they'd cast unknown actors - not because Cynthia Erivo & Ariana didn't do an impeccable job, just to provide more opportunity). I'm very excited for part 2, although I hope it is a little more different to the stage show than the first film was - I loved that it was very accurate and just added to what was already there in the stage musical, but act 2 of the show is a little messy and I hope they make it even more excellent!

Totally agree, that would be great! I heard there will be two brand new songs for the second movie by Stephen Schwartz (original composer/lyricist for Wicked) who said “The storytelling required it, and therefore they were created — the intention was that they were organic and not imposed on the movie.” This makes me even more intrigued to catch the second installment!
