Columns

Post by Prof. Maxim Trevelyan »

Columnists have the opportunity to contribute to their column with each issue of the paper that comes out. Unlike other submissions you do not have to have entries approved once we begin publishing your column.

To apply for a column, please follow the instructions in the columnist application thread.

We expect you to submit regularly. If you don’t submit for 2 issues in a row, we’ll contact you to find out if you want your idea to remain active. If we don’t hear from you by the deadline we give you, your idea will be removed from the list. If you tell us you do want to keep your column running, you’ll need to submit to the upcoming issue for it to remain on the list. Once an idea has been taken off the active list, other people are free to apply for a column on that topic (though not, of course, your original idea).

Topics
You may write about any topic you like provided you feel you can write more than one article focusing on it. All topics must be HOL appropriate.

We try to only have one column on a particular topic running at once but we can be flexible if the formats/focuses are different enough. For instance, we might allow two columns on books if one was based on book reviews and the other was on literary news. If you’re not sure if your idea is different enough, reach out to discuss it with us.

Sources
If your column is factual/informative in nature (rather than creative or opinion based), you must cite your sources. Any factual columns without sources included won't be published.

Requirements
You can earn 10 points for articles of 150 words or more, 15 for articles of 200 words or more and 20 for articles of 300 words or more. The absolute maximum we can publish is 2500 words but we would appreciate it if you could keep your column far below that as it makes it easier for us to edit and for people to enjoy.
