Well... I guess I wanted something a little original, and something that people in the normal world wouldn't have.

Midnight just kind of popped into my mind, because I like all the connotations that come along with it... danger, mystery, darkness... and since my character is in Slytherin, then it seemed quite fitting.

I chose Slater quite simply because I like the last name. A boy in my high school had it, and its stuck with me ever since.

Mitsukai is an original character that I often use in my fan fictions. It means "Angel" in Japanese, which is in direct conflict with her nature, so I thought that would be funny.

Hisame is the name of one of the shrinemaidens from Fatal Frame 3. I think she was the really crazy violent one, so. . .enough said, I think.

I wanted a good, non-exotic, general purpose boy's first name, and "Bill" seemed the best.
"Garanhir" is Welch, roughly translating to "The Hunter". I understand there was an ancient Welsh king by that name, which fits my wanting to belong to a very old wizarding family. /cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="B)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

Well one day I was looking for the Irish name for my name Margaret(i go by Maggie) and I found Mairead. I mispronounced it untill I saw a commerical for the Celtic Women group but I still always mispronounce it. I also was shocked when I read a new book recently and a character was named Mairead!! I came up with Falcourt because my friend and I thought it sounded like Falcon Court, which was my intitled group in a RPG we played in real life. So that is how Mairead Falcourt became Mairead Falcourt!

My name, hmmm... Well, my close friend, out of nowhere, said "You know, I think you should be named Suzette because it sounds like a mad rad '80s name." The name just stuck with me. Since then I've gotten nicknames such as Suzie, Suze, or my personal favorite, Sushi. My last name, Lovee, was chosen because I'm such a loving person and I believe in the power of love.

Hmm, my name.
I chose Zia because I just happened to stumble across it in an Agatha Christie novel. And I loved it! I'm Indian, so I wanted a name which sounded both exotic and foriegn to me, and Zia fitted wonderfully. That, and also the fact that the name starts from the last letter in alphabets made me choose it, because I could find it easily in lists of alphabetical order!

My middle name is Aurelia. At first, I decided to use the name Aurora for two reasons- because it's the name of a gorgeous Disney Princess (in case you don't know, it's Sleeping Beauty), and because it reminds me of the Aurora borealis and Aurora Australis(the Northern and Southern lights respectively), and they're SO beautiful and mysterious. But then, one day in Biology class, I learnt that the genus name of jellyfish is Aurelia. I loved it! It sounded just as good as Aurora, and much more uncommon. So, Aurelia became my middle name, since I had already decided on Zia as the first.

Stonebury, because, as I created my bio, I realised I needed a grand name, since I have a godfather Lord Stonebury, and the Stoneburys are really old pure-blood families. I'm totally awed by the Stonehenge, and it's in Avebury(isn't it?) and Stonebury seemed a nice name for an old English family.

It isn't too long, is it? /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> Anyone else?

I got my name (Luna Galanodel) because I play Dungeons and Dragons and that's my character's name in that...... Luna because my fave Harry Potter character is Looney-- erm I mean LUNA Lovegood, and Galanodel because apperently in Elf it means Moonwhisper (and it matched the first name pretty good and I thought it sounded pretty /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> )

Well, my name on another Potter site was Allison Delaney- Delaney being the last name of a friend that I thought was simple but nice-sounding, and Allison being a name picked at random that I also like. Allison just sort of stuck. Then, I don't exactly remember the conversation, but a friend who is a fan of the movies said something along the lines of "If you were in Harry Potter you would be Tom Riddle because you are crazy." I laughed, but she went on to say "I can totally see you lurking in a creepy basement thing." I have such nice friends. Anyhow, I thought of that when choosing my HOL name, but as I couldn't use Tom Riddle (especially as I'm a girl), I used Allison instead.

Post by Nocturna Grenemearh »

I love this thread, I find etymology of names fascinating and there are so many interesting names here.

As for me, I chose Nocturna as an alias long ago. I first saw the name on a personal/photoshop brush site and loved it. I've been using it for about 3 years, I believe. Obviously it shares roots with the English word "nocturnal" which came from the Latin "nocturnus" which meant "belonging to the night", which is indeed appropriate for myself, as I love the night. To me there's nothing better than sitting out beneath the stars, the moon, or the darkened clouds. Especially when there's a nice fire to keep you warm and toasty.

Grenemearh is something I came up with much more recently (this morning). I usually use the surname Green, because it is my favorite color and I happen to adore Seth Green. But I decided that for HOL it was just too plain. So I set out to find a surname which involved the word "green" but was something more. At first, I come upon the name "Greenhawk" which is no doubt a sweet name, but, although I do love hawks, I felt that I'd be doing myself an injustice by choosing to use hawk when my first love is the horse, but "Greenhorse" didn't quite work for me. I then started thinking about the typical HP names. Most are English, but since my native language is English, English names are a little boring for me. Then I thought of Old English. Perfect, still English-y, but uncommon enough for me to find it interesting. Being the incredibly creative person that I am, I decided to look up "green" and "horse" in Old English (who would've guessed, eh?) and the search returned "grene" (for green, hard to see the connection, I know) and "mearh" (for horse, LotR fans should find this word familiar). Then, I had a stroke of genius and decided to smash the two words together, and voila! Grenemearh was born.

So, that's now Nocturna Grenemearh was contrived.

Cool topic :3

weeell. I chose Tara because Tara is my RP persona. I always name my female RP character Tara. Well, almost always. Sometimes I also use Nuria Monfort, but I didn't use her because she's a character from The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. So yeah, that's where Tara comes from.

As for Aurelium... well gosh. I don't know. No, really. I don't. It was just from top of the head. :x I thought about using Panserbjorne at first, since I adore the armoured bears (especially Iorek Byrnison :x) from His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman. Amazing book. (: Buuut then I decided that's just unoriginal and went for Aurelium because it sounds pretty. haha how creative. :P

Falay Marker - Where'd that come from? Well, I'm a big fan of Dragonriders of Pern, and so I'm in a guild/site thing for it. And I was running out of candidates name and I needed two for a pair of candidates for an evil weyr, Dark Mists Weyr. I came up with Falay, because it become F'lay if I chose to cut it when she impressed, and I could Folan for her brother, and then they would have similar names. Anyway, later, I joined a fantasy site, and decided to use the name Falay again, but with a last name, so it became Falay Cutter. Well, when I joined HOL, I decided to use Falay again, so then everybody could call me Fly. /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> Marker came because I wanted something that would remind me of Cutter, but not be it. Markers are very cool, I used them to doodle all over myself when I was bored in math class this year, and markers can also be in the sense of mile markers, from travel and important events in history. So there you go, I became Falay Marker here, but call me Fly.

Heh. I do think about names quite a bit...
Portia was the name of one of Shakespeare's strongest heroines, a sought-after heiress in The Merchant of Venice. She is intelligent, tactful, and quick-witted.
Delphine holds two meanings for me. Delphi was the site of famous prophesy in ancient Greece and its surrounding counties. The Pythia (female oracles at Delphi) had one of the most powerful female roles in Greek history: they were consulted before every great decision, from waging war to building temples. Delphine also happens to be the adjectival form of dolphin, and dolphins are notoriously calm, serene, and social creatures.

So, Porta Delphine has the potential for intelligence, grace, power, and great friendship. Not necessarily in that order. /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

April Marsters

Post by April Marsters »

How did I choose my name? Well, April is my first name in RL and I don't think I could stand being called something else. My mind can't work like that. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> So sad I know, but Marsters is the last name of a celebrity. James Marsters!!! He plays one of my favorite characters on Buffy the Vampire Slayer (and he's very cute! /wub.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wub.gif" />). So that's how I made my name!

Well I think Cassiopeia sounds pretty and its a constellation (even though the queen its got its name from doesn't have a pretty story). And Mellors because thats the last name of Oliver Mellors, that wonderful character from Lady Chatterley's Lover. I love that book and I love DH Lawrence.

I chose my name because I've always wanted to name my kid Ayden. Also Albus Dumbledore is my favorite character so since I already had an "A" first name I should get a "D" last name so that I could share Dumbledore's Initials.
