Fish in a Tree: February Book Discussion

Post by Prof. Amy Lupin »

Everybody is smart in different ways. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its life believing it is stupid.
This month we’ll be reading Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. It follows the story of Ally, a girl who later finds out her learning difficulties can be attributed to dyslexia. When one of her teachers takes her under his wing, she is able to flourish.

We have put together a rough guideline for the month, but you're welcome to read the book at your own pace:

1-7 February: Chapters 1-12
8-14 February: Chapters 13-25
15-21 February: Chapters 26-38
22-28 February: Chapters 39-51

We'll also be providing a question or two to spark off the discussion in each post but feel free to ignore them. We want to hear your thoughts while reading, however small or obvious you think they sound!

What do you think of the title of the book? Does the quote it is based on resonate with you?

If inspiration strikes you, please feel free to share some of your own fan fiction, poetry, stories or fan art.

If you have any suggestions for future book discussions, please drop us an email at hol.bookclub @ gmail.com (with the spaces removed).

The title of this book really resonates with me (as does the quote). School systems, at least in the US, are very flawed for the current world as a particular YouTube video shows.

I didn't really understand the quote, but I so agree with Shadow. I'm just glad that this flawed system is slowly changing in different schools.
