Uranus had been visible to the naked eye prior to its classification but had never been considered a planet due to its dimness and slow movement. William Herschel discovered it in 1781 while using a reflective telescope he had made for himself; he originally thought it was a comet. Studies made of the planet's orbit soon revealed that it was a planetary body.
