Prompt: Sell It to Me

Post by Prof. Sky Alton »

This is a synopsis/blurb for Philosopher’s Stone (curtesy of Goodreads):
Harry Potter's life is miserable. His parents are dead and he's stuck with his heartless relatives, who force him to live in a tiny closet under the stairs. But his fortune changes when he receives a letter that tells him the truth about himself: he's a wizard. A mysterious visitor rescues him from his relatives and takes him to his new home, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
After a lifetime of bottling up his magical powers, Harry finally feels like a normal kid. But even within the Wizarding community, he is special. He is the boy who lived: the only person to have ever survived a killing curse inflicted by the evil Lord Voldemort, who launched a brutal takeover of the Wizarding world, only to vanish after failing to kill Harry.
Though Harry's first year at Hogwarts is the best of his life, not everything is perfect. There is a dangerous secret object hidden within the castle walls, and Harry believes it's his responsibility to prevent it from falling into evil hands. But doing so will bring him into contact with forces more terrifying than he ever could have imagined.
This is an ‘Elivator Pitch’ for it (curtesy of me)
Underdog protagonist finds out he’s a wizard and goes to a school to learn magic where he faces an evil long thought vanquished

Both of these can play very important roles in the publication and promotion of a book. The Synopsis’s purpose is obvious: it sells the book to a reader. The Pitch is meant to sell the story to a literary agent, publisher or film studio before it even gets to a reader. A pitch doesn’t necessarily need to be a sentence long (long enough to pitch to someone on the journey between two floors in an elevator) but it does need to be snappy and to capture the fundamental plot points and or concepts at the heart of the story.

For this month, I’d like you to write a synopsis, a longer pitch or a series of elevator pitches (or a combination, providing they equal 200 words or more). You can do this for books that already exist or you can do it for a story of your own devising. Just make sure the words are your own.

You’ll earn 20 beans for completing this prompt as well as it counting towards the chance to snag our shiny Quill and Ink award.

There is no deadline as such for these prompts but if you’d like it to count towards your chance of earning the award for a specific year, we’ll need it by the end of that school year. If you’re comfortable sharing, then post below. If not, email your story to us via hol.bookclub @ gmail.com (without the spaces). Oh and remember it’s a good idea to check through your piece carefully for spelling and grammatical errors as they make it harder for people to properly enjoy your work.

This is a synopsis of Cinder by Marissa Meyer
At first, Cinder's life was terrible. She's part robot, which doesn't make her step-family like her anymore. Her life takes a turn for the better, or maybe worse, when she discovers that she's the lost princess of Luna, the moon. Along with her eccentric android friend, Iko, Cinder plots to overthrow her aunt, Queen Levana's rule. Along the way, Cinder falls in love with Emperor Kai only to find out that Levana is plotting to marry and kill him, thus taking over rule of their country. Sadly, Iko is destroyed by Cinder's step-mom leaving only her programmed chip. After unsuccessfully barging in on Queen Levana's and Emperor Kaito's ball they had planned to discuss "business matters" and causing mayhem, she is arrested and awaits transportation to Luna where she will be killed. Luckily, with the help of a doctor that she knew, she is able to break out of prison with a convicted criminal. This convicted criminal, Thorne, has a stolen space ship that Cinder and Thorne are able to escape out into space in. Once out there, Cinder is able to successfully plug in Iko's chip to the ship making her practically the "captain" of it. In the end, they begin to plan and think of ways to overthrow Levana's rule and put Cinder on the throne.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, or, Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll.

A lonely girl dozes off under a tree and dreams of a white rabbit in a black waistcoat hurrying off somewhere and looking at his pocket watch exclaiming that he is late, as if he was a human. Alice follows him and discovers the world of the white rabbit, which is so full of outright silly wonders and strange talking animals, that confuse Alice to her very core, culminating in the weirdest adventures a human mind could possibly conceive. From the Queen of Hearts, straight out of a pack of cards, playing croquette to an orange cat, Alice sees it all. It is as if she is looking at an impossibly diverse world that changes every moment and makes only the opposite of sense all the time. Even her own size doesn't remain the same, for getting through the innumerable various-sized doors means that Alice must eat treats that make her grow larger than or shrink smaller than her surroundings and also be careful about stopping at the right quantity for the right size. This new world is Alice's escape from her mundane life that she longed to leave behind, but it is one that is so strange that she equally longs to go back to what is normal. Despite all its weirdness, there is something Alice must learn from and something that she must appreciate in each nonsensical encounter.
