November Prompt: The Wind of Changes

Post by Prof. Tarma Amelia Black »

In November come many changes to our physical environment. Winds come up and blow the leaves off of trees. A chill enters the air, freezing happens. Or, in the southern hemisphere, things start warming up. Winds might start to decrease, lose their chill factor.

How do the changes of seasons, particularly the onset of wind, and the rain or snow often brought with the wind, affect books? Some books seem to use the change of seasons as a major plot device.

For example, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has a whole section dedicated to when Harry, Hermione (and sometimes Ron) are occupying a tent out in the wilds. No shelter from winds, outside, or from snow or ice.

What would have happened in the story if they had had to flee in the middle of summer? Would it have seemed so dire, so urgent, for them? Would the hardships sustained have made the same impact?

What book do you think of, or portion of a book, where it is set in the beginning, or dead, of winter where the whole plot and feeling of the story would be changed if it was set in a balmy summer?

Your write-up needs to be at least 200 words to count towards Beans (and any possible award)! If you post a graphic, please keep it to 600x600 or smaller, and write a brief description underneath what the graphic depicts.

You will receive 20 Beans when you post. Any replies in here, through the school year, will be credited towards a possible award. As always, please keep to HOL appropriate sources for your post.

There is no deadline as such for these prompts but if you’d like it to count towards your chance of earning the award for a specific year, we’ll need it by the end of that school year. If you’re comfortable sharing, then post below. If not, email your story to us via hol.bookclub @ gmail.com (without the spaces).

Remember to click preview before posting to look for spelling and grammatical errors -- or see if auto-correct changed what you wanted to write to something entirely else!
