Uriah Tattenhall is a happy family man who lives in London and runs his own business. His temperament is placid and he is usually a jovial, optimistic kind of person. However, he suddenly feels disheartened from realising that after many years of hard work, he has the same amount of money now that he had when he first set up his business.

Uriah decides that he wants so much more for himself, his wife and their four children. So, like some of his friends, he contemplates a life- changing option of moving away from England. Upon hearing that his friends have a better life on pastures new in a different land, Uriah sells his business and takes his family on a 3 month journey to Australia.

As soon as the journey begins, Uriah hears a rumour. Is it a forerunner of good luck or bad luck? Do the family find the abundant, prosperous way of life they are searching for when they finally arrive in Hobson's Bay or is their dream of a better life becomes a nightmare?
