Post by Vanessa Tilley »

Book: The Invited
Author: Jennifer McMahon
Series: No
Genres: Adult/Mystery/Paranormal/Horror

Brief Summary

The Invited is an interesting mystery that involves Hattie Breckenridge and her ancestors as well as history teacher Helen and her husband Nate. After losing her father, Helen and Nate decided to build their dream home in Vermont. As they build their house, Helen learns about the history of the land they are building their house on. Helen and Nate end up falling down a rabbit hole full of mysteries, lies, and danger.

Thoughts:
The Invited is very well written and her descriptions are wonderful. I especially enjoy her descriptions of the magical white doe and the encounters various characters have with the doe. Jennifer is able to bring the comfort and warmth of Vermont to you.

I enjoyed the look into Hattie Breckenridge's ancestors. She had a long line of strong female daughters and granddaughters. It was interesting learning about the curse that seems to follow those women though.

I am a big horror fan so I was a little disappointed because I would not call The Invited a horror novel. It is still an enjoyable read but there was not as much action or supernatural events as I believed there would be.

I also had a hard time getting into The Invited. I was disappointed with how much of the novel was just focused on the building of the house. I know some parts of the build is important to the story but there could have been a little less of it and maybe more background information on the Breckenridge line instead.

The Invited is a good novel that I would recommend for fans of the supernatural.
