Book Review: The Truth of Right Now

Post by Shiloh Adlar »

Title of the book: The Truth of Right Now
Author: Kara Lee Corthron
Genre: Young Adult/Realistic Fiction

All I can say is wow! I started reading this for another reading challenge I'm doing. I chose it for the challenge of having people on the cover, but it ended up also meeting the challenge of reading an entire book in one day. I could not put this book down (although I had to at points because of commitments), but the moment I picked it back up, I was pulled into it again.

The story is about a girl named Lily who is having a rough time at school after a major event happens in her life. She meets Dari, an African American boy who seems to keep to himself and his art. They are both a mystery to each other, and that's what brings them together. The book shares a story of their friendship while tying in interracial issues, that between relationships, society, and the law. Lily and Dari come from two very different worlds, not only different racial backgrounds but also very different family backgrounds. Although it is only touched on throughout the book, these differences play a crucial role. A quote from the book, one that is on the back cover is this, "If you could take back one thing you've done in your life, do you know what it would be?" This quote here says everything.

I highly recommend this book. The lessons it can teach are critical.
