Book Review: The Underground Railroad

Post by Prof. Will Lestrange »

Title of the book: The Underground Railroad
Authors: Colson Whitehead
Series: N/A
Genres: historical fiction
Short summary of the story: This story features the attempt of two children to escape from slavery in a 19th century Georgia plantation to freedom. In their journey they use the titular "Underground Railroad", which students of American Muggle history will understand as the secret network of safe houses designed to help slaves escape into their freedom. In the book, though, the "Underground Railroad" is a literal railroad complete with trains (and, seemingly, one stop for each state).
Good points / bad points: The book does a good job of using a fictional metaphor to convey a very real chapter in American (Muggle) history which has very relevant lessons even now in the 21st century. However, you can guess a lot of the plot from the chapter titles in the table of contents, many of which are just state names.
