Book Review: 13 Days of Midnight

Post by Rowan Oswald »

Title of the book: 13 Days of Midnight

Authors: Leo Hunt

Series: 13 Days of Midnight Trilogy

Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Horror

Short summary of the story: Luke is a 16 year old boy. He lives with his mum, who is into New Age stuff, but is plagued by headaches. He hasn't seen his dad since his parents split up. Luke's dad has a paranormal show on TV. Luke's dad has just died. Despite not receiving a Birthday card for the last 3 years, Luke gets a letter telling him he has inherited everything. Eager to get his hands on the millions of pounds his dad has left him, Luke is too quick to sign the forms put in front of him by his dad's sketchy solicitor. It turns out there's a catch to the cash, his dad was a necromancer and he's also inherited his dad's Host of murderous ghosts. with the help of the school weirdo Elsa, he has to master the Host before Halloween or he could lose much more than just money.

Good points: Elsa was a well developed character. She was bullied at school and the effects of that were important to the plot.

Bad points: It was clunky. Certain pointless events occurred because the plot demanded more time to have past. In my opinion plot devices shouldn't be blatantly obvious. I would have liked the author to go into more detail on necromancy, but this is only book one, that might happen in later novels.
