Characterful Categories

Post by Prof. Sky Alton »

Who doesn’t like receiving a shiny award?

Well, this term, we’ll be handing them out to some beloved literary characters.

Each week, we’ll post a prompt such as ‘best hair’ or ‘most likely to have an antique spoon collection’ and you’ll nominate a character from a book who (in your opinion) fits. You’ll need to include their name, the book/series they’re from and a brief explanation (at least 10 words long) as to why you’ve picked them.

Your reasoning could be logical or it could be funny/sarcastic, it’s up to you.

Please keep in mind HOL appropriateness when picking your characters/series.

You can nominate one character per prompt and you'll earn 10 beans per nomination. Beans will be awarded when the next prompt goes up.

Have fun!

So, to get us started:
Most likely to start a protest

For example: Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter Series - She has strong feelings and a maniacal flare for organisation.

Jo from Little Women. We already know she bucked against some of the social conventions of her time, and was frustrated about how much harder it was for her to follow her dreams. I could see her easily leading a suffragette protest in her own time actually.

Darrow O'Lykos from Red Rising.

We know for a fact that he not only started a revolution, but that he took a series of risks and very painful measures against himself for that revolution to succeed. Darrow also has a lot of class consciousness, and does not handwave the injustices around him as if they were a pesky element of daily life that one needs to get used to.

Gimli from The Lord of the Rings, he is a loyal, caring, and protective. I'm sure he is ready to speak up if his friends being treated unfairly.

Most likely to go on a mindfulness retreat.

Frankenstein's monster has spent a lot of time trying to hide away from society and he seems to prefer being alone, so a retreat could be an ideal way for him to escape and be left alone.

Most likely to go on a mindfulness retreat.

Maddie from Alone by Megan E. Freeman

She is by herself for a very long time after an "imminent threat" forces everyone around her to leave the entirety of her city and state, and she's left behind. I think she would be fine on a mindfulness retreat as she practices mindfulness every day, even if it's not what is commonly thought of as mindfulness by most people.

And onto our next award…

Most Likely to adopt something toothy as a pet

For Example: Keladry of Mindelan from the Protector of the Small Series - She never seemed to be able to say no to someone or something in need, however likely to take a chunk out of her it was.

I can imagine Tilly from The Bear (by Raymond Briggs), because she is just happy to have a wild animal living in her home.

This might be a different answer, but Will from Turtle Boy because he had been keeping turtles as pets and has been working on coming out of his own shell and facing his fears. He learns that turtles aren't meant to be kept as pets, so I think now that he's facing his fears, he might end up wanting a dog or something with teeth showing that he will still defend himself, but he won't be afraid anymore. Plus, it'll be a good friend that can be a pet for him.

Our last prompt for September is…

Best dress sense

For example: Sauron from the Lord of the Rings – we may not have seen much of his ensemble’s but boy was his taste in jewlery on point.

Best Dress Sense

I can't help but think of Mary Poppins. She always looks respectable and dresses so neatly that her attire would be suitable for going almost anywhere that required the smart, casual sort of look.

We continue into October with some new prompts!
Most likely to disappear for a month
For example: Aerin Firehair, from The Hero and the Crown, who apparently disappeared back in time (quite unbeknownst to her) while fighting her evil uncle. She hadn't intended to lose time, but doing so didn't deter her from her goal!

Beans have been sent to Emerald. :)

Most likely to disappear for a month would be the Bingley Sisters from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice; they will go away for as long as they need to keep their brother, Charles, away from women they feel are an unsuitable marriage match for him.

October is noted for having lots of foods available, including delectable deserts ...
Most likely to win a pie-eating contest
For example: Pippin Took, of the Lord of the Rings saga, who loved his 'second breakfasts'. All Hobbits love to eat, but Pippin apparently took the love of eating to a new height!

Emerald has been sent some beans!

Most likely to win a pie-eating contest

Maybe Liza from A Taste for Love because she grew up in a bakery and her mom hosts a yearly baking competition. She also wants to be a baker and loves trying new baked goods. Even if she didn't win, I'm sure she would probably sign up for one just to taste all of the pies to get ideas for new recipes.

Most likely to win a pie-eating contest

Mr Bumble, from Charles Dicken's Oliver Twist, could easily win this competition because he has such a big appetite, and I think he would enjoy the competition all the more knowing that the children residing in his workhouse wouldn't be eating any pies.

The Dueling Club was formed in late 1992 at Hogwarts, by the infamous Professor Gilderoy Lockhart.

Someone who would greatly enjoy a paint-ball fight

For example: Keladry of Mindelan -- who would learn how to utilize this new 'weapon' and be fiercely competitive in it! Imagine Kel, as a Page, armed with a paint-ball gun, fighting with the other Pages ....

Beans are sent to Aura and Emerald!

Oh, did no instance of paint ball fighting pop up for anyone? :o (I also thought of Aziraphale and Crowley being involved in a paint ball fight ... ) Well, here we are for the next prompt!

Who doesn't enjoy a good joke?

Who would be most likely to tell a joke which no one finds funny?

For example: Luna Lovegood, who has a very unique way of thinking. I think that most people find the statements that she makes, in all seriousness, to be very entertaining -- but that something she regards as funny might actually, to others, be very serious. :)
