At the sunrise she stood at the door of the house, fingering her necklace. In her hand was the potion, shining brightly. As she knocked, the house swayed when the old woman appeared. She reached out to the old woman, potion in hand, when she heard the words, "Come in" (50 words)

Words for this week are:

world, journey, crown

In order to get rid of the unwanted crown, she thought that she had to travel the world. So she went on a journey to far-off lands to find a magic elixir which would free her and found, on returning home, that all that was really needed was her choice. [50 words]

Finally, my journey had come to an end. No longer was I trapped here, I could leave this twisted fantasy world behind me. I looked at the bright white door hovering in front of me. Ripping off my thorn crown I opened the door and stepped through it. (48 words)

December ends with these words:

house, magnifying glass, phone

The mouse skittered across the wooden floor in the house, finally coming to rest by the phone book, which someone had left laying by the sofa, a magnifying glass sitting on top of its folded and dog-eared pages. Then she vanished under the sofa, cheese firmly held in her jaws. [50 words]

"And this" the guide led us into another room, "is the highlight of our tour. The collection of miniature doll houses. Most of these are one of a kind works." He passed around a magnifying glass, "Look here for instance, this phone alone took a few hours to construct." (49 words)

Christmas had indeed been memorable; her father had built her a tree house, her mother gave her an antique magnifying glass for her school project, and her brother got her a Taylor Swift cell phone cover. She hoped they appreciated her gifts to them as much. (46 words)

This Week's Items are....
Keyhole, Speech, Dice

With the pick in the keyhole, she took a moment to breathe. Even through the wall, she could feel the tension outside building: the speech was nearly over. The crowd must feel it too. The future was waiting, like a dice balanced on a corner. She had to get out. (50 words)

The keyhole hanger was broken, he found, as he attempted to hook the portrait on the wire. His resultant speech, albeit muted, featured jumping jackrabbits, deceptive dice and torturous toads, as well as other, less colourful, phrases. [37 words]

She looked as the speech proctor rolled the dice. If a 5 came out, she would have to go first . Hoping, she looked at the dice. A 5. Her heart sank. Still, she stepped onto the platform and began, "When we were little, we used to spy through the keyhole..." (50 words)

She smiled at her reflection in the full length mirror; those earrings always reminded her of a pair of dice! And her gown was perfect, from the embroidered lace to the keyhole back. Even her Maid of Honor had written a great speech. She was so ready to get married! (50 words)

This week's items are…
Book, fountain, apple

For Example:
She inched along the branch and started as a shower of apples thumped to the ground. She held her breath. Nothing. She reached up to swing herself through the window. The book lay on a table. At last. Hurrying over, she opened it. A fountain of golden sparks enveloped her. (50 words)

Book, fountain, apple

Brian walked out from the library holding the book (that he'd been waiting for for ages) like the treasure it was. He glanced at the fountain in the central courtyard and did a double take. Yes, that was a large golden apple, sitting on the gargoyle's head. [47 words]

He walked across the school courtyard throwing an apple while reading a textbook. It was like clockwork, he never dropped it or faltered. Suddenly he crashed into something and everything went tumbling down. A fountain? There were never any fountains in this school he thought before everything went black.

This week's rolls are....
Mask, Flower, Question

Something caught his eye and he crossed over to the dressing table. Beside a single orange flower lay a masquerade mask, neatly cut from plain brown paper. He fingered the stem of the flower. Was this a threat? A question? A warning? (42 words)

Mask, Flower, Question

Her mask was made of flowers, of bright pinks and yellows and blues and purple. She questioned though – how was it made? Oh, sewn carefully onto a soft gauze. What a wonderful and beautiful present to wear to the Ball. [41 words]

This will be the final week of Flash Fiction for a while as we'll be welcoming Quick Quotes back for the Spring term. Don't worry though, we're not ditching the Story Cubes for good. They will make a return next school year.

So, our final roll (for now) is....
Tortoise, tree, lightbulb

For example....
He hunched up in the bed, tucking his head into his chest like a tortoise. The tree was knocking against his window. Every tap made his eyes screw tighter, lights pulsing behind his lids like he’d spent too long looking directly at a lightbulb. He just wanted sleep. (48 words)

Tortoise, tree, lightbulb

The tortoise waddled over to the tree and carefully started climbing it. Reaching the top, he unscrewed the lightbulb enough that the light went out, and then carefully went back down the tree. His nightlight out, he went to sleep beneath the spreading branches. [44 words]

The cat stretched and curled up. She rolled and lay on her back like an absurd tortoise. Absentmindedly, she batted at the hanging lightbulb, while staring longingly out the window, silently willing winter to end. She missed climbing her favorite tree.

The lightbulb flickered as she finished painting the landscape on the canvas. Putting the finishing touches on the tree with its various colored leaves, she pondered what else could be added to this. Hmm, maybe if she drew a little burrow over here and added a tortoise next to it, that would look good.

It was a splendid terrarium; a UVA/UVB lightbulb simulated sunlight, a heat bulb warmed a rock for basking, the bedding was comprised of cypress tree mulch, and there was a shallow dish of water for drinking and splashing. Her Russian Tortoise would love the accoutrements! (46 words)
