Astonishing Adaptations

Post by Prof. Tarma Amelia Black »

We've all read a favorite book and then, somehow, amazingly, a movie is made from that favorite book! And then there are those stories that came to the screen first that were so magical, they inspired a book of their own.

Astonishing Adaptations is an "adaptation" themed challenge -- the creation made of your book could be a movie, a TV show and/or maybe an audio drama. (Note: audio drama means a radio play/dramatisation -- not an audio book as that isn't really an adaptation). This also includes books that were directly adapted from other mediums, like novelisations of films or TV series.

The challenge offered in Astonishing Adaptations is for you to both read (reread) three books and watch (rewatch) the adaptations made from those books.

Astonishing Adaptations starts today, November 3rd, and runs through December 15th, 2022, giving you plenty of time to track down copies of what you want to read/watch/listen to, and post about it. To count for this activity, the books must be read and the movies (adaptations) watched starting now.

We are offering an Award to people who read and post about a minimum of 3 books, and who also participate in at least half of the Astonishing Adaptations forum activities. Image There will six activities -- a couple of discussions and 4 puzzle challenges, all involving books and movies (or adaptations) made from them. To count as being part of this activity (and towards the award), all posts and puzzle solutions must be received by December 15th, 11:59pm HOL time.

To qualify for the reading part of the award, you need to post in The Bookshelf for every book which you use for this activity. Your post will be of two parts: 1 - the book report (please read The Bookshelf Overview for a guide of how to write your book review) and 2 - a report on the adaption of the book, saying what it is, when it came out, and whether or not you liked the adaption, and why. Each part of your post needs to be a minimum of 80 words long.

We'll keep track of people and their activity in the post below this introductory post. If you have done something and your name doesn't show up within a couple of days, tell me and I'll double check!

In addition to the specific guidelines in the 'Overview' threads in the subforum, Astonishing Adaptations also needs you to keep a couple of things in mind. Be sure to make your comments a minimum of 80 words long. This does not include the info about the book’s title, author or series. If someone has already started a topic about your book, author or subject, please contribute to that rather than starting a brand new one of your own. (Note: If you post a new topic about a book or author which already has a topic established, we will move your post over for you.) Also, make sure the review or discussion is yours and based on your own thoughts while reading; lifting a review from Goodreads or elsewhere on the internet, representing it as yours, is categorically not allowed.

Please note that, as far as possible, all books chosen must be HOL-appropriate (ie. follow the guidelines set out by the HOL Handbook). The later Harry Potter books are a good guide for the level of danger, threat and darker content that's suitable for HOL.

Here's a bit more detail about the appropriateness of the books you use:
Please remember that we have members of all ages on HOL and try to choose your books carefully. The later Harry Potter books are a good guide to the level of threat, adult content and bad language that we consider appropriate. If you think your book contains material that might be upsetting to members or inappropriate for a younger audience, please include a warning so that people can make an informed choice.

If you have any further questions not covered here, please ask here - Astonishing Adaptations Questions - or send me a HOL PM.

Things to remember:
1. On-line fanfiction does not count, but you can certainly re-read a book, listen to an audio book or read a graphic novel. This is for the book portion of the activity, not the adaptation portion!
2. If you’d like to read or re-read one of the Harry Potter books and then watch that movie, please feel free. However, we would prefer you to read other books with the Harry Potter book to qualify for any Award.
3. In the case of books that are adaptations of other mediums, they should really be direct adaptations of the original storyline, rather than companion books or spin-offs. So, a novelisation of a Doctor Who TV episode would qualify, but not an original story set in the Doctor Who universe. We are willing to be flexible on this though so if you aren't sure if something counts, just check with us.

If for accessibility reasons you can't complete any of the Forum activities, please just let me know and an alternative can be worked out.

Remember, Astonishing Adaptations runs through December 15th, 2022!

If you choose some fast reads and/or short books, you can still get a couple of books read and then some movies watched in the next week!

All hail Kalgri Sicaria who successfully completed the activities required and read the books needed to receive the Astonishing Adaptions Award! Kalgri finished all of the forum activities and read (and watched) three books and movies made from them. Well done! B)

Thank you all for participating -- it was great fun to read what you wrote in the Discussions and Book Reviews (and sometimes comments on the puzzles .... ).

If your name is listed above as participating in our Astonishing Adaptations, you will find a present of Beans from us! Again, thank you.
