Each team consists of seven players. For Quaffle play: 3 Chasers, 2 Beaters and 1 Keeper; 1 Seeker takes part in Snitch play. The team captains are responsible for deciding who plays in each position.

For purposes of Quidditch eligibility, each game will be considered to belong to the term it was originally scheduled in, even if it gets rescheduled across term boundaries.
Team captains are responsible for ensuring their players are eligible to play. The minimum requirements to play HOL Quidditch are as follows:
- If you played Quidditch as a student or postgrad last term, you must have earned a quill last term - or meet the requirements for probation - to be eligible to play this term.
- If you played Quidditch as a Professor last term, you must have taught a class last term to be eligible to play this term.
- All "Students" must be enrolled in a class and have 'active' status on the HOL members list. This means points must have been earned within the last 60 days before the match.
- All "Post Graduates" must be enrolled in a class and earned points within the last 60 days before the match (i.e. the equivalent of 'active' status).
- All "Professors" should be teaching a class.
Note: Professors Emeriti are not eligible to play Quidditch.

Changing House/Squibbing
From the time a person leaves their old House (ie the date of squibbing), the House they end up joining must play 3 Quidditch games before they are allowed to play. From the 2nd time on that someone squibs, the squib period will be added to. Both students and professors are equally affected by this.

This means the House that a player moving House is joining must have played 3 games (from the date a person leaves their old House) for each house change that the person has made:
- First House change: 3 games
- Second House change: 6 games
- Third House change: 9 games
- etc.

During a match, no substitutes in players are allowed, for any reason (disconnected, forced off). There are two small exceptions to this rule:

1) If the Keeper times out, and it comes to Chaser v. Keeper, the game will be paused for 1 minute. If the Keeper doesn't return the team then has two choices:
- Leave things as they are
- Move a player who is already on the field to the Keeper position
Once a player has been moved to the Keeper position, these positions are set - if the original Keeper returns they must sit out the remainder of the game.

2) If, during the course of the game, a player (or players) drop out, at midgame (break), a change of player position (of someone who is currently playing a Quaffle position in the game) may be allowed to keep a Quaffle position covered that would otherwise be open, even if it results in doubling (as long as the other conditions of Doubling are met).

Doubling of Positions.
If a team shows up with 3 or fewer total players, they might be allowed to have 1 player double in order to field up to 3 Quaffle positions and (if possible) Snitch. In particular:
-A team with ONE Quaffle player is ALWAYS allowed to double that player. (This means that a team may have two players, and if one of those persons is Seeking, the other is allowed to double in Quaffle.)
-A team with TWO Quaffle players is allowed to double ONE of those two players (so that Chaser, Beater, and Keeper each are filled)... if and only if the opposing team has at least two more TOTAL players (Quaffle plus Snitch) than the doubling team. (This means that if a team has 3 players, and one of those persons is Seeking, one of the other two persons is allowed to double in Quaffle.)
-In no event may a team double if the end result of doubling involves covering four or more Quaffle positions (so a team with 3+ Quaffle players can never double, and a team with 2 Quaffle players can never double both of them).

Conceding Matches
1) Any team may forfeit a game before a match. Quidditch House Points
Forfeit of one team/failure to show:
- 0 points to forfeiting team
- 150 points to team that showed (100 for showing up, 50 for snitch)
2) Any team can concede at any time during the game. Reasons for conceding include both "mercy rule" situations, as well as emergency situations that leave teams unable to continue play, regardless of how well they are doing. No points differential is required in order to concede.
3) House points: If you show up and make an effort to play (at least 15 minutes of play), you get 50 house points. In order to get the full 100 house points, you need to play until the break (which could occur at either 30 or 40 or 45 minutes, dependent on snitch).
4) Snitch
--If other team forfeited snitch prior to the match and you concede during the game, neither team receives house points or game points for snitch.
--If you forfeited snitch prior to the match and you concede during the game, nothing would change from the way it would be handled if it was a full game. The other team earns 50 game points from snitch and 50 house points from snitch.
--If snitch was being played and you concede Quaffle during the game, the other team automatically earns the 50 game points and 50 house points from snitch. (The snitch match may continue if the seekers and reff wish, but outside of the Quidditch game, which is now over.)
5) Conceding is up to the discretion of the teams; they are never obligated to concede and may choose to play the entire match if they like.
6) In a case where a team (Team A) is winning but cannot continue to play (or must play sporadically), (e.g., they have 2 very strong players but no one else, and then player A loses internet and player B has a health issue), they have three options from which to choose:
a) Concede the game to the team with fewer Quaffle points. The game is then resolved in the following way:
i) If Snitch is still in play, it is IMMEDIATELY forfeited, along with the corresponding House Points and Game Points, to Team B. If Snitch has already been resolved (i.e. by forfeit or concession), nothing happens in this step.
ii) If Team A still has more total Game Points than Team B, then Team B is awarded enough additional Quaffle points to give them 10 more Game Points than Team A. For example, if Team A was up 200-70 in Quaffle and the previous step forfeited the Snitch to Team B (putting them at 120 Game Points), then Team B would be awarded 90 additional Quaffle points, which would make the final score 200-210.
NOTE: If awarding the Snitch to Team B in the previous step gave Team B more Game Points than Team A, nothing needs to be done in this step.
iii) House Points for winning the overall game and participation are awarded as above.
b) Continue to play but sporadically -- let it be known in #refchan that this is being done so there is no possible misunderstanding that you are 'refusing' to play, but simply doing the best that you can in the circumstances which currently exist.
c) Say you cannot play (in #refchan) but wish the game to continue. Snitch continues if it is being played. The other team (Team B ) will continue to play Quaffle and accrue Quaffle points, until either Snitch is caught (if Snitch in play) or, if Snitch had already been forfeit (by either team) before the game started, until 60 minutes of Quaffle time have elapsed, or, if either Team A or Team B concedes Snitch, again play continues to 60 minutes of Quaffle time.
* Both b) and c) House and game points (quaffle and snitch), will be counted as if the game is a regular game ('regular' as per these new rules).

This rule of conceding with games involving Snitch play is effective now (June 16, 2019).
Previous rule of conceding matches, effective start of Spring 2017 term, was:
A match may be conceded at break if there is a point spread of at least 100 points. This may happen only if there is no snitch play. If there is snitch play, the game ends when the snitch is caught. Conceding is up to the discretion of the losing team; they are never obligated to concede and may choose to play the entire match if they like. The team who concedes gets House Points for showing up and playing. (This is not a forfeit.)

Effective as of posting (October 1, 2016):
1) If a student (or postgrad) plays Quidditch in a given term but fails to earn a quill that term, then they will ordinarily be considered ineligible to play for the next term.
2) However, a player who would normally be considered ineligible to play as per 1) may instead choose to go on probation for the next term instead, subject to the following caveats:
-A player CANNOT choose probation if they have already chosen probation in any term in the preceding two and a half years (i.e. any of the preceding FIVE terms).
-If a player chooses probation, they MUST declare their intent to do by informing their Captain, who will then inform the Quidditch Board of the player's choice. This process must be completed no later than 24 hours before their team's first game that term.
- Professors are NOT eligible for probation. Even if their status changes to Post Grad or Student in the Term following that in which they did not fulfill their commitment to their classes, they still must sit out the next Term's play.
3) People CAN play Quidditch while on probation. However, their eligibility requirements will become stricter while they are on probation:
a player on probation will need to earn 1 Quill AND earn at least 250 total points to fulfill the requirements of their probation. Fulfilling these requirements will return the player's status to normal in the next term. If the player fails to fulfill these requirements, they MAY NOT PLAY in the next term.
Playing Quidditch while on probation will be seen as agreement with the stricter eligibility requirements above.
4) If a player chooses NOT to go on probation, they will become eligible to play Quidditch again after sitting out for one term.

Quidditch is a sport and teams get competitive, but we ask that you keep your frustrations in your team channels and other private venues. Unsportsmanlike conduct includes, but is not limited to, taunting the other team in the game channel or insulting nicks on IRC or even refusing, when participating in a Quidditch match, to play.

Players who exhibit unsportsmanlike conduct will be suspended. In order to lift the suspension, the player must be present at next game their team plays AND stay the entire game. They can help out their team, but they cannot play.

If an entire team is deemed unsportsmanlike, they forfeit their next match. In order to be eligible for the match after the forfeited match, they must still show up and play in the forfeited match.
