Re: Week 6 - Discussion: Chapters 16 and 17

[OUT OF CHARACTER] The first time I read the logic puzzle... led to the second time I visited the HOL castle! Back in 2007 when I was finally catching up on the books (see my student or professor profile for some details), I was looking at the potions logic puzzle and stopped my speed read to try to...

Re: Week 6 - Character Discussion

But I wanted to talk about the vibe in Ravenclaw House, from Terry Boot's perspective, after winning the Quidditch Cup due to Harry's absence in a pivotal match! Was your character shocked or surprised or revolted when they heard about Quirrell? Or, did they even hear about him at all? (As always I...

Re: Happy (one day late) Birthday, Will!

Thanks for all the birthday wishes! Still waiting on the computer I ordered last week to arrive, but... had tasty food and drink *and* received a path forward for some of my more annoying surprise medical issues so could be a lot worse!

Re: Week 5 - Character Discussion

What would your character consider to be the worst detention ever? I'd say that the worst detention ever would be one that could be expected to result in physical or mental harm to me. After all, if I came out of detention in such a bad state that I was unable to revise, I would not be a good membe...

Re: Week 5 - Discussion: Chapters 13 - 15

This part of the book showed us the first time just how fickle Harry's classmates (well, except for Ron and Hermione) were... and how what seemed to be house spirit and community was really a sense of 'what have you done for me lately?' Thinking about how Harry had never had any friends before Hogwa...

Re: Week 4 - Character Discussion

(just going to say: for obvious reasons, it's always very difficult to write from the perspective of an RQT supporter ;) ) Prompt chosen: Chapter 11 None of my friends are on the team this year, but we're still here to support our house, and to see and be seen! We're up against Hufflepuff this year,...

Re: Week 4 - Discussion: Chapters 10-12

Backwards writing puzzles are surprisingly fun! Although I still have remembered for Quidditch the following exact text: Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi ("I show not your face but your heart's desire" backwards with spacing rejiggered a bit)... I remember being thrown off by the 'word' "...

Re: Week 3 Discussion: Chapters 7-9

[OUT OF CHARACTER, but very consistent with my student and professor HOL profiles] My first experience with the Hogwarts castle was a July evening in 2007, two days after the Deathly Hallows release. I finally decided to see what the fuss was all about, being marooned in an incredibly boring New Mex...

Re: Week 3 - Character Discussion

Terry Boot What was your character's first interaction with their Head of House like? I knew I would end up in Ravenclaw - nearly all Wildsmiths tended to - but I was a bit surprised to be looking down at my Head of House! Professor Flitwick introduced himself to the first years at the end of the W...

Re: Week 2 Discussion: Chapters 4-6

The moment outside Madam Malkin's is one of those things where everything could have gone very differently if something had changed slightly . This has been explored in fanfiction very frequently - one that I enjoyed is even called "They Shook Hands" because the point of divergence was specifically ...

Re: Week 2 - Character Discussion

Chapter 4 I was at home, with both of my parents, when an owl showed up with my Hogwarts letter. This did not come as a surprise; after all, my mom was a witch from a distinguished line... and I had performed some accidental magic (getting certain interesting items and snacks closer to me than I cou...

Re: Week 1 - Character Discussion

Terry Boot What is your character's family legacy? "Unremarkable but comfortable" would be the best way to describe it. Or at least comfortable considering the fact that I was torn between two realms; my mother was a witch from a respected, but not particularly prominent line (the Wildsmiths - clai...

Re: Week 1 Discussion: Chapters 1-3

Every time I looked back at the first two chapters or so after the first time I made it through the series, it became apparent to me that Professor McGonagall was taking major risks to ensure baby Harry Potter's well being, scouting out what his next few years would be like with the Dursleys... and ...

I'm going to vote for my (out-of-character) birthstone for this prompt: emerald! I do not have any jewelry with that stone in it as far as I know, but it simply looks gorgeous! The lesson's depiction of emerald manages to be perfectly color-coded for Slytherin with the frame and chain looking silver...

[OUT OF CHARACTER] I have heard Prof. Kendra Givens (possibly before she was even a professor) talk about wanting to teach this class for quite some time, and remembered her talking about her ideas for the class with much interest. This made me want to learn a bit about the course to see the topic t...
