Short History

The Ravenclaw Quidditch team is an integral part of the house, currently with an active team of over 15 members. Ravenclaw has had an interesting history regarding Quidditch---with a points record in the negatives the first two years and climbing to first place three years in a row. Below is a rather brief (I tried!) history of 7 years of Quidditch (for a full history, you might have to wait a little longer, it's in the works!).

The Beginnings

September 2001

The Spellbinder was published with a little blerb on how Quidditch would be played. Matt Whisp (former Ravenclaw Head Boy) was made Quidditch Captain and Mary Potter was made Co-Captain. Professor Romulus Xanthos (whose name derived the ever-fun "Xany trivia" played during practices by many of the House teams today) worked with the RQT as coach and adviser. Members involved in the creation of the team were: Colby Holroyd (motivational speaker), Leah Samson (team trainer and former Head Girl), and Godric's Ghost (the timeless legendary genius who later created snitch play still being used today). Practices were held regularly, and Matt's love for the Spanish language evidently led to the naming of what the RQT sees as their section in the common room: Nacho Cheeze.

October 2001

First Quidditch match of the season took place on October 27 between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff, with Leah as the first official referee. This part of Quidditch included Quaffle and Snitch (which was a type of scavenger hunt, as current snitchplay was not developed until after the first two games of the year).

November 2001

The RQT's first game was on November 11 against Slytherin. The lineup consisted of chasers Matt (the chaser who was born with a Quaffle in his hand), Mary Potter, and Ginny Black, beaters Godric's Ghost and Fiona Keith, and Kimaire Seloiro as keeper. Flea Apollo Creed (former Head Boy) was the first seeker for the game. The first game went to Slytherin, where the score was 100 to 70. Snitchplay (created by Godric's Ghost) was then added into the mixture, with Kimaire being the next seeker for the team.

December to May 2001/2002

Kimaire was made Co-Captain due to Mary being busy with real life. Xanthos stepped down from coach also due to real life issues. During the first year, RQT also won two games later on against Hufflepuff and Slytherin.

Summer 2002

Flea and Professor Asclepius Argumentus (later known as Chris, Duke of Bury and former Deputy Head of House) became the co-coaches.

HOL Year 2002/2003

The team didn't have good luck with seekers, with very rapid changes from Kim to Matt and then to Rhiannon Llewellyn (current Head of House). Unfortunately, RQT only won one game against Slytherin during the year, but it seemed as if the team's troubles might have changed. After more real life problems (the seekers really were quite busy those days!), it was then decided that Leah was to be the new seeker---a change which brought RQT to victories afterwards. October Jackson had been named Eagle's Talont for the year due to her immense trivia skill and extremely fast fingers. New talent also included Tinuviel Undomiel (later known as Tinuvie Levante) and Angharad Granger (later known as Hari O'Duibhleargain).

Rising up in the Ranks

HOL Year 2003/2004

Summer Quidditch League brought about new and promising members to the RQT. After being discovered on the low-profile team of Wimbourne Wasps, Ryan and Cassandra Lobiesk were asked to join the ranks of the RQT greats (to their pleasant surprise, I'm sure). Under a rigorous fun training regime, the team finally turned its Quidditch record around. Lineups changed from game to game, but the games of the year debuted the 'difficult-to-pass' beater Preppy!Wall (consisting of Tinuvie/Nuvi and Cassandra/Cassie). With Matt, Kim, October/Toby, Ryan, Nuvi, Cassie, Leah, Hari, Sindor Aloyarc, and Saphire Nightingale on the team, it looked as if we could do no wrong. After two years in fourth place, RQT placed second, losing only to Gryffindor.

HOL Year 2004/2005

Even more members joined us this year, including Mark Mandrake, Sayuri Anderson, Alecia Amethysta, Leora Lobel, and Pippa Chase (and WYATT!). The game Ravenclaw versus Gryffindor on November 6, 2004 became memorable, because for the first time in three years RQT celebrated a win against the legendary greats of GQT. It was a tight race between Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw during the year, but with the final game decided on a Ravenclaw win. It was the first time RQT took the Quidditch Cup home with them.

The Later Years

HOL Year 2005/2006

The coming of another year meant the departing of even more members of RQT. This included Kim's resignation as Co-Captain, which brought about Nuvi's appointment to the position. In the middle of the season, Mark replaced Leah as the team seeker as well. This was also the year that Maya Winters and Sophia Manasa made their outstanding debuts. It was also another close call for RQT when the ranks came down to merely points difference. With a points difference of 180 against Gryffindor, it became a Ravenclaw victory, and once again the Quidditch Cup was ours.

HOL Year 2006/2007

With veteran Quidditch members now at university and others getting engrossed in real life issues, it became apparent that Ravenclaw needed more participation in Quidditch. Nuvi stepped down as Co-Captain, to be replaced by Ryan. It was a shaky year, with some of the games being played at a maximum of 3-4 active members of RQT present at the time. With lack of practices and so many busy members, it seemed very unlikely that Ravenclaw would be taking the Quidditch Cup again for a third time. Well, another points difference away and RQT beat out GQT yet again, performing a three-peat in Quidditch.

HOL Year 2007/2008

Sadly, after 6 years of leading the RQT to success, it was also time for Matt Whisp to step down as Quidditch Captain. As his last act as Captain, Matt appointed Ryan Lobiesk (Captain) and Maya Winters (Co-Captain) to take the reigns and lead the team for the season. Over the summer, Ryan and Maya have both decided that it was high time for simple tryouts to take place. With the simple botting requirements and the memorization of musical lyrics attuned to Ryan's tastes---which included Amy Winehouse's "Rehab" and Rihanna's "Umbrella"---the new RQTers practiced and had the time of their lives.

A small inner-team crisis occurred, however, when Ryan decided that---after a few months into the season---he would step down as Captain. However, instead of appointing the new Captain and Co-Captain, Ryan was requested to appoint two "Co-Captains" instead. Maya Winters and Cassandra Lobiesk became the RQT Duumviri (named by Prof. Ulol Kimil), where both co-captains have equal say and power regarding the team (the first in the history of HOL!). Under their leadership, the RQT experienced yet another season win, pegging the HOL Quidditch Cup with them for the fourth season in a row, another HOL first.

Quidditch Now

This year RQT officially includes Adeliene Cromwell, Alissa Kirby, Tara Aurelium, Severus McGonagall, Rosanna Gullveig, Alexia Riaper, Adelline Aldridge, Annie Chandran, Kyrie Adderholt, Piper McLaurin, and Aylarah Scale. Veterans include Mark Mandrake, Cassandra Lobiesk, Maya Winters, and Ryan Lobiesk.

The Ravenclaw Quidditch Team has faced quite a bit of difficult and rather enjoyable times. There have been issues inside the team and amongst other House members. There have been laughs, inside jokes, random nicknames, and overall good fun within the team channel. There have been insane amounts of botting. Members have come and gone, but they will never be forgotten by those they have played alongside of. After experiencing Quidditch for 6 years of my time in HOL, I must say, I wouldn't trade it for the world.
