I do not know about you, but summer is probably my favorite season. I have had some really great summers over the years, and I have had some not so great ones. Two of my favorite summers have been the past two, when I have gone to a really awesome summer camp, which I am returning to later this summer.
One thing about this camp that makes it so great is the variety. Some camps are sports camps, some are art camps, and some are performing camps, but this one has it all! In one day, I will improve my skills at one or two sports, reherse for a play, and probably complete or at least work on an art project as well.
Also, the food is pretty good. I know summer camps have a reputation for terrible meals, but these are not that bad. Once a week, we have a barbecue, and the weekly grilled cheese day is always a hit! Besides, when there's absolutly nothing that you like, there's always classic peanut butter and jelly. The camp also provides vegetarian and lactose and soy free options for those who need them. Clearly, camp food doesn't deserve it's reputation.
One of my favorite camp activities is adventure. I love the feeling of making it to the top of the climbing wall, or completing a new route up the climbing tower. From my perch at the top of either one, I get a fantastic view of the rest of the camp facilities. It makes all the sweating, and sliding grips, and feelings of not being able to make it completely worthwhile. The rush of the wind on my face on the zip line or giant swing is also a really cool feeling. When I finish, there is always a huge smile on my face.
Another one of my favorite camp activities is drama. Sure I get a touch nervous while waiting for the results to come in, but when I see that my character is one of the ones who has even a few lines to themself, it's all worthwhile. After auditions come the three weeks of working hard to memorize lines, learn lyrics and choreogrophy, find costumes, and generally get the production ready to be performed for the rest of the camp. The day of the performance is a whirl of last minute costume finding, final run throughs, and deciding who gets microphones for when. All campers in the production are exempt from the rest of activities, so that we can get ready for the big night. When the curtain opens, those who aren't in the scene are backstage, and those who are are in their starting positions. Break a leg!
Clearly, I really enjoy the summers that I spend at my summer camp. Whether eating good food with great friends, climbing, swinging, ziplining, putting on a play, or doing any of the other many activties camp has to offer, I am always having a great time. I don't know what this year will bring, but I am sure that it is going to be great whatever it is!
