Od Magic - April Monthly Book Discussion

Post by Prof. Tarma Amelia Black »

In April we read a story of magic, mysterious and wonderful, outlawed and wild, in Od Magic by Patricia A. McKillip.

Graphic shows a picture of a woman in brilliantly coloured garb, which appears to be silk and heavily embroidered. She is apparently floating (sideways but slanting up to the right) in mid-air. Her arms are upraised and she holds the strings to a beautiful mask (which is held above her head, shown against her long and thick brown hair, which floats up and away from her, as if she were underwater) in her fingers. A traveling caravan travels beneath her, on the ground. Surrounding her are small butterflies and winged horses and flowers and birds and stars. Up in the upper left is an image of the head and neck of a man whose eyes are obscured with star-strewn blue 'mask'. A dragon congeals out of a veil which extends up from the woman (to the right) to the top of the page and then to behind the man.

Here is a guideline for reading Od Magic -- but remember, it's only a guideline! Read (and enjoy) at your own pace and post when you have finished a certain section.

1-7 April: Chapter 1 - Chapter 5
8-14 April: Chapter 6 - Chapter 11
15-21 April: Chapter 12 - Chapter 18
22- 30 April: Chapter 19 - Chapter 27

There are so many books, now, which focus on having magic, using magic, being magic. This is one of many, but it stands out enough it was a nominee for the Locus Award Nominee for Best Fantasy Novel (2006) and the World Fantasy Award Nominee for Best Novel (2006).

So what do you think when you finish a section? Please write! Everyone has their own ideas of what they have read, their own reactions to the story. Whether it be a 'wow' or a 'ho-hum' how did you feel when you got to these parts of the story? Tell us! (We will offer a suggestion or two for you to address which you can ignore if you so please!)

If inspiration strikes you, please feel free to share some of your own fan fiction, poetry, stories or fan art.

Remember, if you have any suggestions for future book discussions, please drop us an email at hol.bookclub @ gmail.com (with the spaces removed).
