December Newsletter

Post by Arianna Stonewater »

As we head into the last month of 2018, we realize there is a lot going on at HOL! Everyone is getting in their assignments, preparing for exams/class projects, and trying to squeeze in some naps between all of the holidays! Below are some snippets of items from around the school:

For those who don't know, HOLLERS is a fun club open to all the houses! We have a points system called "HOOTS" which you can earn by completing activities! At the end of the month you can earn the aptly named "HOOT Award."

Looking for more awards? Those who are particularly active in the HOLLERS Forums are eligible to win the "HOLLERS Award" which is given out with staff discretion; sometimes we give one out every month, sometimes a month or two is skipped! Finally, if you check out the Inspirational Categories section in the Creative Outlet, there are multiple awards to earn!!

Here are the current point standings, knowing there is still time to earn more:

Hollers News
With each new month, we will post 3 new puzzles in our Monthly Challenges and different prompts in the Creative Outlet sections of the HOLLERS Forum!

You are welcome to participate and post in The Scrapbook. We've a place for you to put your HOL Memories! Click to read more.

House News
As a reminder, every common room must be signed up for separately from the main HOL Forums. You can join every common room, though you will only have full access to your own house's forums. There are still many fun things you can do when visiting others though:

Gryffindor
Gryffindor invites everyone on a school trip to the mountains. Encounter snow! Encounter a yeti or three! Fun and Rubies wait in there. Read more about it in their Pawprint -- hot off the press and ripe to read!

Hufflepuff
Sirius is hosting Huffle HOLidays 2018 in the Sett. All are welcome to attend! There will be many challenges and tasks to do. He writes "The tasks would offer a very wide range of activities, from gift giving, parties, [and] playing in the snow, among others." Visit the Games Tent -- aka DoHGaS (Huffle Department of Games and Sports) and see what new opportunities to earn Diamonds are there for you! Remember that The Sett is hosting Fantastic Beasts 2 in January! Now is your chance to watch the movie or read the screenplay. You will not have to have done either to participate and earn full Diamonds, though.

Ravenclaw
As always, Ravenclaw has their Debate Club and folks from all Houses are welcome to come give their opinions. (Debate Club). The Eagles will be having an 'Eagle only' winter event, focusing on winter celebrations of some different cultures. The Alte deadline for December has been extended to the 10th. Maybe you want to submit something?

Slytherin
Slytherin has just opened the doors for their Silver Snake Gift Exchange. In addition to that, Slytherin continues with the Harry Potter Read-Along with tasks and trivia. They've also got the Puzzle Exchange and Gobstones Club where you can enjoy different things to do and earn Scales at the same time.

News From Around HOL
Book Club
Book Club is taking a break from Monthly Book Discussions in December and January. Instead we are doing our Winter Reading Challenge 2018/19! There are weekly updates for Flash Fiction participation - where you can write a very short story! :)

Gatherings and Games is back from a short winter break where Amy looked for the rare Srifflopedium and Sky tamed a just-hatched dragon. (She says the dragon followed her home. Uh huh.) The next games are Dec. 16 - click here for more info!

Quidditch- We have two House games scheduled for December.
Quidditch Schedule. One is Slytherin vs Hufflepuff on December 8th and another is Ravenclaw vs Gryffindor on December 15th.
Be alert for Quidditch Pick-ups! The next game is Thursday, December 6th, 3:30 am HOL time. That is, for folks in the USA and on Eastern Time, 10:30 pm Wednesday and for those on Pacific Time, 7:30 pm Wednesday. You do NOT need to be a Quidditch player to attend! Come join us and just have fun (and watch Will go boom). :D

In addition to that -- watch out! WINTER IS COMING. :o

*Special thank-you to Prof. Tarma Amelia Black for gathering all the info together!*
