Prompt: All at Sea

Post by Prof. Sky Alton »

The Book Club is taking to the high seas this month. The ocean has captivated writers for as long as there have been writers. It can be a calm and tranquil place or a shipwrecking beast. Boats and islands are also the perfect setting to throw characters together and keep them there. Then there are all those stories about what might lie under the waves…

This prompt is pretty straightforward! We’d love for you to write a story (200 words or more) where the sea plays a significant part. It could be a romantic stroll along a beach, the log of a ship on a voyage of exploration or a thrilling tale of pirates. Providing it’s appropriate for all ages, it’s up to you.

You’ll earn 20 beans for completing this prompt as well as it counting towards the chance to snag our shiny Quill and Ink award.

There is no deadline as such for these prompts but if you’d like it to count towards your chance of earning the award for a specific year, we’ll need it by the end of that school year. If you’re comfortable sharing, then post below. If not, email your story to us via hol.bookclub @ gmail.com (without the spaces). Oh and remember it’s a good idea to check through your piece carefully for spelling and grammatical errors as they make it harder for people to properly enjoy your work.

A Pup-rific Day at the Beach

One day, there were 2 teenage boys walking along the ocean. One boy's name was Leo and the other boy's name was Harry. They were walking along talking about the latest movie that had came out called The Ecoboys Take Over the World. Then they heard a whimpering sound. So, they walked towards the sound. It was coming from the ocean so they slipped off their shoes and socks, and walked slowly closer to it. Finally, they got to the sound. It was a puppy whose owner was trying to drown it. So, Leo grabbed the puppy and the two boys ran out. When they got back to the land, they grabbed their shoes and socks. Then they walked a little bit higher up on the beach. Then, Leo let the puppy down. Harry could tell it was a golden retriever. Harry and Leo named it Golden Rosie. Then Leo called Golden Rosie and the puppy came running towards him. Then, Harry gave Rosie a hug. Then, this adorable pug came running over. His name was Rocket. So, Harry and Leo took turns throwing the stick for the dogs to go grab. They did for a while so Rocket's owner got bored of waiting so he just walked off and left. So, they had to keep Rocket too, which they weren't sad about because he was so adorable. Then, Leo gave Harry a high five and Rosie gave Rocket a puppy hug.
