Finish the Quote

Post by Prof. Tarma Amelia Black »

Starting in September, we're playing a variation of Quick Quotes (which itself is based on the game Bring Your Own Book).

This is called Finish the Quote.

Each week we provide the beginning of a sentence, a quote from a book, and people are invited to finish that sentence with a fragment (or complete sentence) from another book. (It can be another book by the same author, but it cannot be from the same book.) The new sentence has to make linguistic sense, if not literal sense.

Our first prompt is:

"As she rode up to take a look, "
A Point of Honor by Dorothy J. Heydt

Someone would respond with this --

"the man in black retreated, stumbled, got his balance, continued moving away."
The Princess Bride by William Goldman

Completed new 'quote' -
As she rode up to take a look, the man in black retreated, stumbled, got his balance, continued moving away.

***
We ask that you make all quotes HOL-appropriate and keep this in mind when choosing a book to use (though we understand that it's not always possible to pick one that's entirely g-rated).

Participation in this activity may contribute to your chances of snagging a Book Club award AND you will receive 10 Beans when you respond within the time limit (before the next prompt is posted).

If you have any suggestions for prompts, please send us an email at hol.bookclub @ gmail.com (removing the spaces) with the subject "Finish the Quote Suggestions".

Remember to click the 'Subscribe Topic' above so you can receive notifications of new prompts. :)

New Quote: "Alice thought to herself, 'Then there's no use in speaking.' The voices didn't join in this time, as she hadn't spoken, but to her great surprise, they all THOUGHT in chorus (I hope you understand what THINKING IN CHORUS means—for I must confess that I don't), 'Better say nothing at all. Language is worth a thousand pounds a word!" ― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass

Completed Quote:
As she rode up to take a look, Alice thought to herself, 'Then there's no use in speaking.'
