Reading Treasure Map

Post by Sky Alton » Fri Feb 01, 2019 8:01 pm

The written word can transport us anywhere and this term, we’re taking that quite literally. Pack your book bags, lace up your finest reading boots and get ready for an adventure!

Below you’ll find 3 maps to choose from. They show wild and untested terrain that you will have to traverse, encountering up to 10 separate genres of all kinds. The idea is to read what you love but also to venture into unfamiliar places and see what riches you discover there.

The Reading Treasure Map is an activity that will run for the entirety of the Spring Term: February 1st to June 30th. You can join in at any time. You will pick a map from the options below and read books that match the locations on your map, then post about them on the Book Club.

You’ll receive 50 beans for each book that you match to a location (genre) on your map. That's one book per location, no doubling up on one so you can skip another. If you manage to read 5 books, you’ll receive the Literary Explorer award. If you read all 10, you’ll be eligible for the Literary Adventurer Award. If you want to, you may do a second map once you've finished with your first choice but you will not receive further awards, only beans.

To have a book count, you need to post about it somewhere on the Book Club. This could be a simple Review or ‘Presenting Author’ in The Bookshelf or you could start or contribute to a discussion over on Between the Pages. These posts should be a minimum of 80 words and please read the Overview threads in each forum for guidelines on how to post. Audio books and graphic novels are fair game, though we can’t accept online Fan Fiction. If you’d like to read a book we previously read for a Monthly Book Discussion, that’s fine too. Your review or discussion should be based on your own thoughts and written in your own words: lifting a review from Goodreads or elsewhere is not permitted.

Please post the number of the map you’ve chosen as a reply to this thread and edit in a link to your posts as you make them, including which location you read the book for.

Maps

Map 1:

Locations include:
  • Travel Tributary
  • Science Fiction Shore
  • Crime Creek
  • Non-fiction Canyon
  • Short Stories Sea
  • Mythology Mountain
  • Wildcard Woods
  • Horror Heath
  • Poetry Plain
  • Fantasy Forest

Map 2:

Locations include:
  • Thriller Territory
  • Mystery Marsh
  • Fairy Tale Field
  • Historical Fiction Hill
  • Gastronomy Gardens
  • Biography Beach
  • Wildcard Woods
  • Poetry Plain
  • Mythology Mountain
  • Science Fiction Shore

Map 3:

Locations include:
  • Fantasy Forest
  • Short Stories Sea
  • Re-reading river
  • Mystery Marsh
  • Historical Fiction Hill
  • Drama Delta
  • Wildcard Woods
  • Non-fiction Canyon
  • Biography Beach
  • Gastronomy Gardens
Note: These should all be full sized, novel length books (or reasonably long plays) - definitely not novellas, picture books or similar. In the case of short stories and poetry, you should be reading an entire collection rather than individual pieces. The same goes for fairytales and mythology, unless you're reading a novel that was inspired by either which is perfectly fine too.

Exploring’s no use if you don’t leave a record of what you find so for some extra fun and beans, we’d love you to customise your maps and tell us more about your travels. Visit this thread for more info!

If you have any further questions, you can ask them right here.

Right, you’re ready to set out. Good luck and have fun!
