HOL Meetup: Hotels

Okay, guys. So, Rames and I were talking and here's the deal with hotels: They can be expensive and everyone has a different budget. It's quite frankly impossible to find an option which will suit everyone in the end. Some people want to book today, some people think it's cheaper to wait until a week before they travel. I also can't be sure whichever hotel I pick will have enough rooms for everyone whenever people DO get around to booking.

My suggestion is to get together with friends you want to room/share a hotel with and booking something which suits your needs around the Midtown/Greenwich Village area. If you're going to aim for a hostel, which can be a really cheap option, I'd book sooner rather than later because they disappear pretty fast. Keep in mind that there ARE, however, pretty good last-minute options occasionally. Some hotels even offer "family" or "group" rooms which may be fun and lower the costs a bit for some.

I apologize if this is an annoying announcement, especially for those who have been waiting for me to pick a hotel (I'm looking at you, Buffy) but after going through my list again I came to the realization that it doesn't really matter WHICH hotel I pick; we're only going to be sleeping there, anyway. All the fun is going to happen outside of the hotels. ;)

Reminder: We need to know (by email) if you are attending the HOL Meetup no later than June 30, 2011 in order to make Saturday night dinner reservations for the correct number of HOLers. If you do not inform us by this time, you are still more than welcome to attend. However, you will be entirely on your own when it comes to your meal Saturday evening.

In your email, please include:
- your HOL name and HOL ID
- your age (if under 18)
- the number of people who will be coming with you, if any

I look forward to seeing you all soon!

HOL's 10th Anniversary Meetup 2011

Hello HOLers!

It's 2011 and that means the HOL Meetup is right around the corner. It seems just yesterday we were making initial plans and now there's only a little over 4 months to go!

There are a couple announcements, some more important than others:

- A tentative itinerary for the meetup has been posted, though it is by no means complete or set in stone. The "meet-up points" could definitely change as we are trying to choose the most accessible places in the city which will accommodate a large group of people. The itinerary will become fixed a bit closer to the meetup date.

- In a few weeks we will also be posting a recommended hotel and a couple alternatives to make it easier for HOLers to be able to choose the same hotel as their fellow students. While we would love it if everyone could be in the SAME hotel, we understand that it may not actually be possible. As such, the hotel we select and the alternatives will all be in a similar price range and located within walking distance of each other.

As it is logistically impossible to plan for every HOL student attending the meetup, everyone will be responsible for making their own hotel reservations.

- The most important part: We need to know (by email) if you are attending the HOL Meetup no later than June 30, 2011 in order to make Saturday night dinner reservations for the correct number of HOLers. If you do not inform us by this time, you are still more than welcome to attend. However, you will be entirely on your own when it comes to your meal Saturday evening.

In your email, please include:
- your HOL name and HOL ID
- your age (if under 18)
- the number of people who will be coming with you, if any

4 months to go, guys! 138 days. Better start planning! :)

HOL's 10th Anniversary Meetup 2011

Next summer, HOL will celebrate its ten-year anniversary. Ten years of classes, quidditch, online newspapers, school-wide challenges, crazy forum games. Ten years of deconstructing Harry Potter books and movies, picking up oddball bits of knowledge from Latin class, and moonlighting singing skills on HOL Idol. Ten years of friendship, the strongest magic.

But whether you joined last summer or have been lurking since 2001, you're invited to HOL's official 10th Anniversary meetup in New York City on July 30-31, 2011 -- just in time for Harry's and J.K. Rowling's birthday, too! Come celebrate with us as we reconnect with old friends and make new ones, meandering around Central Park or towards the Statue of Liberty.

For more information, please visit http://www.hol.org.uk/meetup/ and comment to let us know if you're interested in coming! It's difficult to plan without an official headcount, so the more information we have and the sooner we get it, the better. An official itinerary will be released closer to the meetup date.

See you there!

HOL TENTH ANNIVERSARY CONTEST!!! TOP TEN REASONS for STAYING in HOL!!!

Some members of HOL have been present since its inception; some members have just joined; most members are somewhere inbetween in regards to their length of membership. But, no matter the length--we all have our reasons for staying in HOL. Of course, we know that "Learning about the Harry Potter books" and "Making new friends from around the world" are two of the top reasons. But, what are some of the others?

Any member of HOL may submit five (5) reasons for staying in HOL as the years go by. Reasons may be serious or humorous, but must abide by HOL rules for contest submissions. In order to have a reason/reasons selected for final judging by some staff members, contestants will need to be creative with ideas and accurate with wording, spelling, etc.

Points are awarded as follows:
Submitting five reasons--10 pts
Inclusions in final vote--20 pts
Making the TOP TEN--30 pts.

Please put "Top Ten" as the subject of your E-message and be sure to put your student name and HOL ID# in the message. Send submissions by 22 October 2010 to
ProfDragonfly@hol.org.uk

The winners will be announced after the judges have made their final decisions. This is an easy and enjoyable way to earn some points and to participate in HOL's year-long Tenth Anniversary celebration!
